I was lucky to fix   at   approx  25 p kwh eon v11  end of Feb    . I use between  8 and 9 kwh per day   I'm currently paying 60 pound per month....  probably  be  50p kwh hour plus when I come out of it, might go to 120 at least (guess)   but at least the 400 grant  will reduce that a bit
  • I also use about 7.5/8 units a day, cant believe I nearly didn't fix at 35.65pkwh + 41p SC for 2 years with EDF on June 1st as it seemed steep after a previous 2 year at 16pkwh + 21SC had ended, thankfully im a pessimist and assumed things would get worse and when does anything in rip off Britain ever come down after going up? Its now working out now at £80 p/m with the gov 400 grant it will only be £13/14 p/m over winter if i dont turn the rads on. Going to use the spare cash to buy a couple of electric blankets supposedly only 3p for several use, heat the human not the house!

General observation: Have you considered what Octopus Energy has to offer? Things are changing obviously and ain't what they used to be, but time was when one could make savings depending on the tariff chosen. In particular the various Octopus "innovative" time-of-use tariffs which don't appear on any search engine (direct comparisons are not possible). For most of these both a smart meter and a smart head are required, but for those prepared to put in the legwork (over choice of tariff to comply with lifestyle) savings vs BG, EDF & co are not uncommon.

Like you I refused to get a smart meter for a year or more, and was only persuaded to change when it became clear what savings I was missing. You hear horror stories of folk who have been screwed when the technology failed or was not installed by a competent contractor. Moving house is a favourite time for things to go wrong. In fairness to Octopus they were one of the first suppliers to jump on the smart meter bandwaggon. I'd be uncomfortable about going smart with most other suppliers. There is quite a selection of Octopus tariffs that are compatible with non-smart meters though I don't know how they stack up in the current environment with tariffs leapfrogging each other upwards generally.
Usual disclaimer: Contrary to what you think I have no connection with Octopus and (sadly) am not paid by them. Other than being a customer = payments in reverse.

The worst thing that can really happen with a smart meter is that the energy company can't pick up the readings automatically and you need to give manual readings (exactly like with the non-smart meters)

It seems some companies don't notify customers when they aren't getting readings and send estimated bills and customers don't notice the bill is estimated. This is no different to a customer with an old type meter not sending readings.

All customers need to be energy aware and check readings on bills against the actual meter (smart or non-smart).

Increased pricing at the times you’re most likely to want to use energy might be rather worse…..
  • Can someone tell me, if you fix on a certain tariff, is everything fixed? i.e The unit price and the Standard charge for the length of the contract?

With GEUK i am being offered:
    Electricity: 48.12p SC and 38.20p per kwh @ 1976 units = £930.46 yearly. / Gas: 31.31p SC and 11.75p per kwh @ 8000 units annual = £1054.25.  Making it £165.40 per month.

I decided to just check my British Gas account and today I am being offered: Fixed Oct 23v1:
    Electricity: 47.247p SC and 51.591p per kwh @ 1976 units = £1,191.89 yearly. / Gas: 29.292p SC and 15.593p per kwh @ 8000 units annual = £1,353.91.  Making it £212.15per month.

So ensuring my maths is right its a no brainer to try GEUK right?
Interesting, I've been offered BG Fixed Oct 23v1

    Gas: SC 24.480p/day 15.115/kwh
    Electric: SC 37.901/day 49.868/kwh

Hmmmm so it seems you were offered better rates for the same tariff? not that i'm surprised that they do, provably not expecting people to talk about it too much, but ive left anyway and gave green energy a go, should switch in 3 days
  • I'm looking at fixing with Green Energy UK. Its quoting £170 a month, much cheaper than what we've been offered by British Gas, but when I go through to sign up it says they operate Variable Direct Debits. When you sign up is there an option to change this? I'd rather spread it equally through the year than be out of pocket in winter.

Hey Kim, i have recently joined them, currently going throught the switching process, which should be done on the 4th august, i got the variable also, which i am like yourself prefer a standard direct debit.  i assume you can setup this up once the account is up and running, but will have to see, have you had any more information on this?
