It's a problem with new blue passports and digital signatures that still continues. See Honest John motoring for more.

Renewed my passport in June then driving license in July, last year - both on line, no issues.
  • Hi everyone, I have the definitive answer for you all, because I phoned them to complain. The DVLA can pull over all your data and make driving license for £14 online - only if the passport site has your tiny small digital signature scribble to put on the front of your photo card. But since Brexit new passports get sent to your house and you sign them with a biro. So when DVLA web page says it cannot verify you, it means it cannot pull over a tiny digital scribble. I think it all depends on how old your out-of-date passport was. Mine was ancient so my new passport has no digital signature. My partner's only ran out a few years ago and they seemed to have more of her digital data on file.
Strangely, I went to the Post Office and a man who doesn't know me from Adam, didn't ask me for any proof of ID, asked me to sign with an app and pen that was so slow and clumsy that my official UK signature on my official UK photo license is not my signature.
I got my MP to write to Rt Hon Mark Harper MP to get his website fixed and stop offering false services.

The online licence renewal with passport access won't work with any passport issued from around 2019 onwards but they won't tell you this. Mine didn't and I had to renew my driving licence manually in the post.

    But since Brexit
I renewed my passport August 21 and then DL Oct 21, worked fine online with no issues
Sorry but nothing to do with Brexit as I renewed mine in 21 both online and no issues, I also have the new blue passport

Yes, I renewed both of mine in 2020 (post-Brexit) with no problem.

If you have previously held a red passport your new blue one will work - the issue is for people who haven't held a red passport and comes down to electronic signatures. New blue passports are signed when you receive them, as such if you've never held a red passport the DVLA can't verify or get the electronic signature as HMPO don't hold one. Apparently they are working on a fix for this.

Yeah, six years and still counting...
  • Good Morning - Two years on from the original post and I understand that this continues to be an issue for some drivers. It was for me.

However, I decided to try to set up a Driver's Account and add my registered vehicle the same morning, because I thought that I might as well achieve something! I was successful in doing so, using all of the same documentation! Once it was set up and verified - the account asked me to renew my Driver's Licence!

If I hadn't decided to set up an driver's account, I would have lost an hour's work, spent extra money and been out of pocket for both cash and time. Instead, it cost me £14.

I've lodged a complaint to say that if it is possible some small data entry error is at fault, if some email addresses aren't suitable, if trying again after ten minutes - if any of these are worth trying, Driver's should be informed, not simply told that they must go to a participating PO.

If I receive a response, I will share it here.
  • Same issue here - unable to prove my identity.
I have a red passport, issued in 2018, but have no digital signature on it.
The issue is not the passport colour etc, its whether you have a digital signature or not.
Looks like I will have to go to the Post Office thats further away from me, go through the extra hassle and the extra cost, because DVLA haven't fixed the technical glitch they've had for years.
