Petrol or EV for low mileage driver?

No, you need to convert from litres to gallons. So divide your 8K+ miles by 4.55.born_again said:
No offence. But £30 @ 1.70 a Litre. & doing 40 mpg is 8K+ miles a year.majorstare said:Similar situation my wife in 2020.
She only does 2000-2500 miles a year, all local.
We sold her ICE diesel for a Kia Soul EV (MY 2019). It was a little high on milage for a 2 year old car (30k miles) but still had 5 years warranty. Had it for 18 months and its now on 32k miles.
Road tax has gone to nil from £120 something per year.
It costs about £12 a month in electric vs £30-£40 a month in diesel.
Had a major service in February for just £62. Her ICE car would have been £250+.
We charge it for free from the local Aldi every week when we go shopping and get home with more range than when we left!
Cost us £14k and the dealer offered us the same amount to buy it back a few weeks ago.
But Soul EV is a nice car 😁

Hiya we've had a few BEV's now, started with a 2014 Leaf (24kWh), only did about 70 miles, and you had to be careful, but great fun and intro to BEV's, if the mileage is enough. We have a 2018 IONIQ 28kWh, that's a great car, will do 130 miles, 150 if you are careful (but not even in ECO mode), so might be worth considering and if you are happy to wait for a charge, then decent enough range for longer journeys. Our 2020 TM3 long range could do 300 miles, 260-280 cruising at 85, but that's bigger money. And lots of BEV's / prices / ranges between those extremes.gandalftheking said:OP here - spanner in the works... All the views here.... what if I'm leasing not buying?....
Am 64 this year and next car could be the last lease I do. I've leased for years now. A throwback to some harrowing car repair bills as a younger man. I guess the wisdom will be to buy this time around??
Insurance for the BEV's has been less than the 9yr old Zafira we replaced, and under £300pa.Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 28kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

If you are leasing it’s a pretty easy one. What difference in monthly cost is there and would you make that up in fuel savings. My guess is you probably wouldn’t and if I were you I’d lease an ICE or hybrid to be honest. You will also be limited in what they have in stock - which isn’t much right now or face a significant (year maybe more) wait for many cars.gandalftheking said:OP here - spanner in the works... Yes the timing/wait is part of the conundrum. ICE will probably be the way to go...iwb100 said:

You can get pretty competitive lease deals on EVs because the residuals will be fairly high.gandalftheking said:OP here - spanner in the works... All the views here.... what if I'm leasing not buying?....

It depends on what you're planning on doing after the lease term, are you retiring / changing driving pattern?3 -
Still worth looking at leasing an EV through your limited company - costs are corporation tax deductible and very small BIK tax.4

Driving patterns will remain the same, but I'm a bit of a badge snob also, so this factors into the angst. Anything I have liked or gravitated toward (ID3, EV6, Tesla 3 (the 'dream' choice), IONIQ 5, Cupra Born, Skoda Enyaq, and others) seem to be either too pricey (subjective I know) or not available at the time I want them (end June this yr).Herzlos said:

Maybe I need a short term lease (or indeed a cheap 1.0L ICE runaround) until the electric market sorts itself out a bit.

I had this dilemma 3yrs ago. Rather than a smaller ICE or a lease the second hand EV was IMHO the far better option whilst I waited for a few years for the EV market to offer more choice. Cheaper than a lease and much nicer driving experience than a cheap ICE.gandalftheking said:

Fully expected to only keep the Zoe a few years and it's great not to be forced when to change cars like I would have been on a lease (i.e. during an inflated car market).
I've been borrowing my father in law's Model S and now I'm considering a used Model S to replace the Zoe....problem is it's hard to justify when the Zoe does the job!4 -
Out of interest, have you driven a BEV yet? No going back once you do.
Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 28kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.
