Do you have any link to a positive outcome for someone who was denied boarding by Ryanair?
I think the bit in bold is telling:

We have an email from the Greek embassy stating that they would have accepted my wife’s passport - is it genuinely possible for an airline to be within their rights to refuse travel, forcing us to lose £3k on a holiday, when the country we are flying to (which RyanAir should be aligned to) would have accepted us…..
    No its not right
Have a look at this article - https://www.theguardian.com/money/2021/nov/03/left-more-than-2000-out-of-pocket-after-passport-confusion
Especially this part - "The good news is that, according to the specialist aviation solicitor Bott & Co, you can try to claim compensation from Ryanair and argue you were denied boarding without reasonable grounds under EC 261/2004 which has, since Brexit, been enshrined in UK law. The bad news is, the sum payable is limited to £350"
You should be able to claim up to £350pp denied boarding compensation

    I am a Travel Agent

My company’s ABTA/ATOL numbers are G9172/6053. MSE doesn't check my status as a Travel Agent, so you need to take my word for it. You can check my ATOL with the CAA. This signature is here as I follow MSE's Travel Agent Code of Conduct

    And this from the article:
EU requirements do state that passports cannot be valid for more than 10 years (some older UK ones are) but since your passport reaches its 10th anniversary next February that is irrelevant. I pointed this out to Ryanair, but was met with resounding silence.

We all know that Ryanair are a law unto themselves.

Simon Calder is talking about taking a test case to court so we can all get this sorted.I personally am £500 out of pocket. My issue date is 23rd April 2012 and Expires in January 2023 But it is fine to get in and out of UK with Jets 2 .Is anything in this country actually working anymore. Where is the law on all of this!

Thanks all - I connected with Simon Calder in his live Q&A and he suggested a solicitor given the sums involved. I know of a lawyer seeking indirect costs as well as the direct costs referenced above in her claim with Easyjet. I will keep you posted, messaged Bott & Co - thanks for the tipoff and collective genius on this thread... I will also write to our MP, pursuing all channels.  £4k costs incurred as well as the emotion / shock of it and having to rapidly make new plans for the kids during Easter. I bought this as a present for my wife working on the frontline in hospital during Covid.

I am staggered by the collective ineptitude of surely one of the most key aspects of post-Brexit preparation, as well as a genuine lack of kindness or care, esp unfortunately by the numerous Ryanair staff I have interacted with on calls and in person in the last few days.... Will fight on....

For the record, I visited EasyJet in two airports todays (Luton and Stansted) and both said my wife’s passport was fine to fly with. I revisited RyanAir and they stand firm. EasyJet are looking at her being within 10 years from issue and then having 3 months remaining for her extended expiry date to return…

I did misquote her passport earlier as on my phone -

    Issued - 9th July 2012
    Expires - 9th April 2023

Our departure with RyanAir was the 10th April 2022, so their take on it is that if we had travelled a day earlier they would have flown us.

I’m waiting on the response from the Greek embassy but should have that tomorrow.

But speaking to them earlier and looking at the responses from both airlines, there is total confusion…

We’ll have a renewed passport end of April anyway for my wife, and I’ll be writing to our MP to ask why renewal letters aren’t sent out for passports, as they are with driving licences - esp when Brexit took a year off the expiry but didn’t hear about this in the maelstrom of COVID and frontline working… Airlines should also be able to calculate and flag potential expiries in booking and check in website flows…
Writing to everyone to tell them passport is up for renewal would be a massive waste of money and resources. A passport does not have to be renewed

If there was a mobile number on the previous application a text will be sent to remind you to renew your passport Unfortunately it’s likely that a lot of people won’t still have the same number ten years later,.

You'll now need to allow up to 10 weeks to renew your passport. Don't delay, renew today https://www.gov.uk/renewexpiredpassport
Reminder: It takes up to 10 weeks to get a new passport. Don't leave it too late, renew now at: https://www.gov.uk/passport-renew-now
These are the two text messages I received from HM Passport in April and July last year reminding me to renew my passport. (It still took me almost a year since expiry to get around to it, having become so relaxed here in Italy without one.)
    Evolution, not revolution

This was a present for my wife for fighting on the frontlines in hospital during Covid so not giving up without knowing for sure we can’t travel.

And will write to my MP also - I received a reminder to renew my driving licence recently, why not the same for passports — esp when they have taken a year off the expiry without you realising… And airlines must know this at both booking and check in…
It's called Personal Responsibility. Just because DVLA spoonfeed us with reminders don't expect it all the time. One needs to keep oneself informed of stuff that may affect us - like travel rules. God knows there's been enough in the news about the 10-year passport validity issue for at least the last couple of years.

The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

Can you tell us the law as you seem to know it so well ?
