Line dry or tumble dry - or rather, in sight or hidden?

I always line dry when I can. I even think the washing went outside in December in those short days.
I have a Leifheit Telegant pull out clothes airer over my bath- useful for airing. Holds an average machine load.
I also have something similar at my holiday home except it came with 2 wall holders one fixed over the bath and the other outside. (Think that's also leifheit) It means a small load can hang outside before the rain starts!
One of my neighbours (at holiday home) has a canopy fixed along garage side on opposite side from prevailing weather and the clothes blow almost dry under there even when it's raining.
A friend bought one of those 'soon dry' airer thingies from Lakeland which has a cover and runs on a small amount of electricity when it can't go out on the line. Her bungalow is prone to damp so she was very concerned that damp washing might add to the problem.
One solution for 'smalls' is to hang them on a laundry hanger device with small pegs & then hang the whole thing outside - if you can be bothered. They used to be widely available for £1.
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

We've line dried all winter , sometimes in the garden( it's been mild hasn't it ) & sometimes in the poly tunnel, occaionally they need finishing off on a clothes horse or at worst a few mins in the ttumble.Got to love the multi pegged octopus hanger for smalls.6

I bought 2 metal under wear peg thingy
more money but I get lots on them. 1 I use for items like youngests pjs and vests so much easier to grab if need to bring in quick which was my issue when I used tumble all time as didn’t want to watch weather all the time. I also put stuff on line already on hangers for same reason too4 -
It goes on the line outside, person who does the washing hangs underwear inside... their choice, one item which has a 'fluffy' texture goes in the tumble dryer. Husband did once comment about old neighbours knickers needing Glowhite.

Be thankful you don't live in the Shandon Gardens area in Edinburgh.
“No garden sheds or stores or outhouses are permitted in private gardens without the consent of the managing agents.“For the avoidance of doubt, private gardens must not be used for the airing or drying of clothes.
I however don't care that others see me drying my clothes. so outside they go if the weather is nice.

Don’t hurry, don't worry and be sure to smell the flowers along the way.”Walter Hagen

I love line dried washing think it smells different.
Have a portable "twirly" line which can be used indoors or out ( has a sort of tent pegs for anchorage).
Would never have a tumble drier, use a dehumidifier occasionally for heavy stuff.
However have a "thing" about people seeing my smalls (well more like Harvest Festivals these days -
as in "all is safely gathered in ") so those are always dried indoors.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)6 -
Outside, every time, if it's not wet and 'orrible. Washing always smells fresher somehow, dried in the fresh air. Maybe I notice that more because I don't use fabric pong conditioner. I've got one of those carousel things for knickers, and quite frankly, if the neighbours have nothing better to do than gawp at my unmentionables, I feel sorry for them!
I only use the tumble drier for bedlinen when I can't dry it outside, and then only because the bungalow is literally too small to have soggy duvet covers lurking about. Other stuff to dry indoors goes on A-frames over the bath, or on the radiators. If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)5 -
As I type, a whirligig is proudly sporting Marks and Sparks bestIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!4

hear hear. Absolutely! Clearly anyone who does that has time on their hands...they could come and clean my car... or anything else comes to that!LameWolf said:I've got one of those carousel things for knickers, and quite frankly, if the neighbours have nothing better to do than gawp at my unmentionables, I feel sorry for them!

I'm amazed at all the virtuous people who line dry outside. I don't have a washing line, and even if I did I wouldn't bother using it. Everything that can be tumble dried, is tumble dried, the rest dries on my laundry pulley in the utility room. But now that electricity is so expensive, I may have to re-think. I did find that when I lived in houses with outdoor washing lines, the washing often stayed out for days because it kept raining, and bird poo made my clean clothes dirty again. Doesn't it just make more work?Landgirl2
