What's your daily smart meter spend since the price rises?

I'm really interested to know what's the average daily spend you're seeing on your smart meter by 7pm each evening?

I'm checking ours at 7pm each day and it's saying around £7.00!!

For context we have gas / electricity with British gas. Central heating flicks on about 4 times a day. Just 2 people in a 2011 build 5 bed house. Using the gas hob / oven once a day and we each have one hot shower a day. Both out at work for most of the day. Does £7.00 a day seem crazy expensive or is this just the price of it now?

  • The cost figures are only correct if updated tariffs have been sent to your meters. You should be able to check this on your IHD. For people to respond, you also need to provide usage figures in kWh and details of the tariff you are on.

FWiW, gas in particular has risen markedly. In my region/supplier from 4.2p/kWh to 7.36p/kWh. Two years ago, I was paying less than 2p/kWh.

Working from home so two laptops and charging various phones

Smart meter hasn't updated from pre Apr 1st rates but have adjusted to our fixed rate of 29.24p kWh and 50p SC

Didn't put the heating at the weekend (used a heated throw to keep warm) but did some batch cooking (gas hob), dehumidifier running, did two lots of washing and used the dryer, home most of the time so lots of cups of tea. Averaged £4 a day Friday to Sunday.

Today got home at 9pm, didn't use anything before I left for work, forgot to switch the dehumidifier on. £1.30.

3.917 kWh's of electric and a 48.6p SC plus 27.22p SC and 0.163 units of gas, roughly 2 kWh of gas so that works out at £1.97
Someone please tell me what money is
  • My monthly costs, based on my annual consumption, at todays rates is £158. If I divide that by 30 days I get £5.27 a day. It's entirley possible that your costs could be £7 a day in winter.

Rather than focus on a day, if you look at your bills and find your annual consumption, then work out the annual costs based on standing charges and unit prices. Divide that by 12 to get your average monthly costs or 365 for a daily figure if you must. It's a good exercise to do to get your finances prepared for what is to come in energy costs. There will be another rise in October most likely.

But for me roughly 6 units day electric at 27p unit so its about £1.80 day rounded up. £2.30 including SC.

I don't have a smart meter, but I read the mechanical meter every week and can tell you that electric is approx £1.33 per day and gas is approx £1.74 per day depending on the weather, so £3/day worst case currently.
In January electric was the same, but gas was approx £2.46/day, so about £3.80/day total.
    Including standing charges.

    I don't have a "smart" meter.
I did do a calculation this morning using meter readings from 14th March and today.
Over the 23 days period the averages work out at -
    Electricity - £1.81/day.
    Gas          -£2.20/day.

Thanks for all your answers - an average of £7.00 daily spend by 7pm each evening does seem steep then considering there are only two of us! We have the thermostat at 19 degrees and the heating timed to come on 4 times a day which I don't think is too excessive. I don't know whether to contact British Gas to have them check the accuracy of our smart meter - we can literally see it ticking up when we boil a kettle! Costs us about 5p!
