All our mattresses are Vispring (holiday lets too) and whilst they aren't cheap they are incredibly comfy and they last and last.

If you think the mattress topper will provide the softness you need, I can recommend that Premier Inn Mattresses. See here: Premier Inn HCB | Welcome (premierinnbed.co.uk)

These are Hypnos mattresses, but made to a commercial rather than retail quality. I bought five of them for ourselves plus our rental properties about four years ago and they are all still fine. They are quite firm without a topper, but I think with a good topper, you will be fine.

The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

I’m pleased with the bed we got. It’s from the local bed shop who get them in turn from a local - ish bed factory. No big brand names so was pretty cheap in comparison to the likes of Bensons.

Ours is a galaxy - sprung plus foam - really comfy and surprisingly unsweaty due to the fabric topper. https://www.beautysleepbeds.co.uk/galaxy%20memory%202000.htm

Our 4 drawer storage divan and mattress was £600 around 5 or 6 years ago and still really comfy.

I’d recommend a local bed shop rather than one of the chains for this reason.

We rate Hypnos too but we used to turn it regularly - 2nd one in 30 years just starting to go but we'll replace it when we move house.
Sorry I can't think of anything profound, clever or witty to write here.

I feel your pain OP.  I have not had much luck over the years - On my 5th mattress  in 12 years
    1. really cheap one(I think £200) - lasted me 6 years
    2. Not sure of the brand - from Dreams(around £1200) - middle collapsed in 1 year (replaced under warranty)
    3. Tempur (Cost around £2800 ) - absolute waste - the memory foam started coming apart in 2 years
    4. Sealy with built in topper (cannot remember the price but above 1000) - has started to sink.
    5. Current one - bought online for £200 and seem to be ok

In my personal experience, the cheapest mattress seem to be longer lasting than any others.  We have another Sealy (cost around 500) and has been going good for 8 years! Will never ever touch Tempur in my life!

I'll take the suggestions from everyone and thank you OP for putting this thread up.

We've had our Hypnos mattress around ten years and it's still in great condition. It's a medium-soft and has a wool topper from Devon Duvets, same age as mattress, which is also in great condition.  My bones are old and this combination suits me very well.

Thank you for all the relevant responses & keep them coming !

VI spring seem to get very good customer reviews.  However, for over £1300, I should expect it !

I quite liked the idea of a "Premier Inn" mattress, but the small print says what they ship is not exactly the same as what they supply to Premier Inn.

I went from a waterbed to a Dreams pocket sprung with a built in latex top and love it.  I do also have their matress protector on it, which is slightly padded.  The topper doesn't make me sweaty at all.

Visprung from JL coming up to 9 years now and I do feel it could do with replacing. This is because the room it's in is a bit restricted width-wise and I haven't been proactive about turning the heavy old thing on my own. So it probably does have more life in it.

Memory foam is a sweat-inducing gimmick IMHO - forget it.
