Buying a Mattress that lasts ?

I need a new mattress. The criteria are:
1 It must be comfortable & medium-soft (I currently have a waterbed)
2 It must be durable & I expect a long life.
I was thinking about getting a good pocket sprung mattress from a traditional brand, then putting a memory foam topper on top of that to give the soft feel I need.
As it's a separate topper, if that develops a sag, I can replace it after a few years, keeping the main mattress.
However, the customer review scores for the likes of Hypnos and Sealy on Trustpilot or Amazon tend to be worse than for "mattress in a box" brands like Simba or Emma. There are always some reviewers claiming it's lumpy, or they can feel the springs.
How do I go about this ?
I don't mind spending up to ~£800 for a double size. Although, if I spend £800, it needs to be a lot better than a £230 Ikea mattress in terms of comfort and durability.
Customer reviews suggest that paying up for a Hypnos mattress doesn't guarantee better quality.
[FYI: I've been running a water bed for nearly 20 years. I had to replace the mattress once and the heater once. It's VERY comfortable, however I'm intending to replace it because of heating costs and the current temperature controller doesn't seem quite as stable as the old one.]

Go to a big bed shop and lie on everything? Even if you don't buy from them it will help inform you about types of mattress.

Vi-spring all the way. Costs a lot more than £800 but will last 10 years so a cost of 50p a night is worth it in my opinion2006 LBM £28,000+ in debt.

Have a look at the John Ryan website. Even if you don’t buy from them there is a lot of useful information about mattresses/beds.7

Our Harrison is about 8 years old now and still as good as new. We use a feather topper on it, as memory foam doesn't help my hot flushes!

It’s good to know the type of mattress that you want , which cuts out a lot of uncertainty.
Fwiw, when I moved into my new home a few years ago, I made a mistake . Being massively overweight at the time and on steroids, I ordered the hardest firmest mattress there was. As I’m a side sleeper that was a big mistake . I now have a pocket sprung ( same as previous) medium soft this time , and it does the job .When I ordered a new divan bed from divan beds direct ( I think that’s the name) , I ordered new mattress with it.
The main thing find these days, are the amount of variation plus wether you want a mattress that you turn over or just keep on same side and rotate every few months .As for memory foam, I’ve not tried it but apparently it makes you sweaty .
plus where in the olden days a mattress arrived at your home as a mattress. These days many arrive rolled up .I have no idea , but maybe a geltex mattress may be the closest in feel to a waterbed. With mattresses so many have bits of everything so it’s difficult.Maybe it’s best to go to your local mattress and bedding specialist ..1 -
FWIW, also get a mattress protector AND a zip coating to protect the mattress
It means when you've finally worn it out, it's dead easy to give it away because it's in near pristine condition4 -
