Well the reason i am on BR is because my employers who are sorting my p46 or whatever it is are to lazy (in a nut shell) to put it through, she told me its currently processing but as its christmas time people feel they can take a break and do things more slowly and that i will be rebated or something, so basically just have to wait...

This is appalling and I would seriously think about escalting it!! Christmas time should mean its even MORE important that YOU are paying the correct tax as lets face it, at this time of year we need all the wonga we can get!!

Is this your assumption of the payroll department or what you have been told?

  • Remind your employer that HMRC procedures require that the P46 must be completed and processed prior to the first pay date, unless you yourself (the employee) are the cause of the delay.

  • ok thanks for this info, it was my las day today so i will give them a ring tommorrow! and this is what i was told by a reed employ as she told us that its currently in process as there is are quite big delays with this

IN a nut shell she said i dont need to fill anything more in as they are handling it etc and i will be given the money so... i should still get on their case about it ye?
  • if you are working as a temp for reed, chances are you are being ripped off i'm sorry to say. I worked for reed health care in cardiff as a temp and they never paid me on time for all the hours i worked. there was always some excuse; the time sheets weren't returned on time, the fax machine wasn't working the person who is dealing with your pay is at a meeting, out to lunch etc etc.the bottom line is reed do not like paying their staff and will use any and every excuse to avoid doing so. whether it's registering you for BUPA without asking you, taking NI contributions and income tax which you dont need to pay or deducting spurious mileage allowances from your pay. their latest rip-off is only allowing you to access your pay slip on line, so if you dont have a computer bad luck! get away from them and find a decent employer!

You have a legal right to be provided with a payslip. Ask politely and explain you will contact ACAS if they refuse.

  • I don't know if I am on the correct thread either but I also have a problem with Reed Employment.I have been working for them for some time now as a Social Care Temp and I can not get them to pay me on time. No matter how careful I am in returning my time sheets or how much I comply with the deadlines for claiming pay I am always out of pocket and as soon as one dispute over money is settled I find they have underpaid me again the following week. Does anyone else have this problem with Reed and if so how did they resolve it?

However he told me that all the new starts were on BR.

Mind you I got it wrong too as I thought 522L needed the suffix of Wk/Mth 1 to be emergency code. Apparently 522L with or without the code is emergency code.

I can also see where BR is often referred to as the emergency code as in the absence of a P45 and a P46, the employer has to use BR. So it's being used in an "emergency basis".

    No wonder people are confused!

522L without the suffix of Wk/Mth 1 is NOT an emergency code it is the normal Cumulative code for the 2007-2008 tax year. This means that the employer knows the exact cumulative income the employee has had since 6th April and the exact amount of tax that they have paid whether they have just started or have been with them since before the start of the tax year.

If an employee starts in the middle of the year and doesn't have a P45 from a previous employer or the Job centre then they should complete a P46 which the employer sends to HMRC. HMRC would then issue a tax code for them to operate. In the interim the new employer should operate 522L Wk/Mth 1. However many employers operate a BR code. Tesco's and Asda are 2 who come to mind.

I'm sorry but you are incorrect.

522L IS the emergency tax code

522L is both the normal code (2007/2008)for anyone who has no adjustments to his allowances (then it is applied on a cumulative basis), and also the emergency code (2007/2008).
    When it is used as the emergency code it can be applied either as a cumulative code or as a week 1 /month 1 code. If the new employee does not have a P45 then a P46 should be filled in. There are three options;

    A
    – This is my first job since last 6 April and
    I have not
    been receiving taxable Jobseeker’s
    Allowance or taxable Incapacity Benefit
or a state or occupational pension.
    OR
B – This is now my only job, but since last 6 April
I have had another job, or have received
    taxable Jobseeker’s Allowance or Incapacity
Benefit. I do not receive a state or
    occupational pension.
    OR
C – I have another job or receive a state or
    occupational pension.
If option A is ticked then 522L is used on a cumulative basis
If option B is ticked then 522L is used on a Week 1 Month 1 basis
If option C is ticked then BR is used.
If the employee does not fill in a P46 then BR is used, and the P46 is sent to the tax office with the employee section blank.
So although 522L is the normal code the tax office may change it when they get the P46 for example if tax is owed from a previous year, or they get an allowance for washing their uniform.

Perhaps this will clarify matters - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/pommanual/PAYE11015.htm#4

Generally when taxpayers refer to an emergency code it is one which an employer is using which does not take account of any tax a taxpayer has either under or overpaid in that tax year. A suffix of Wk/Mth1 means the code is non cumulative and falls into that category.

BR means the taxpayer is not being given the benefit of their personal allowance.
