Thanks alot for the whole advice!
Just got my payslip today and as you said i am on BR tax code
The pay the person quoted me on the phone was correct at the hourly wages
£108.64 - £23.76 for tax and - £0.95 for National Insurance = £83.93
One thing worries me - they took reed rewards £-2.29 out of my wage? what is this and can i get it returned? i cant remember agreeing to any reward scheme?
Thx everyone - i will speak to my manager at work and ask him for a p46 form correct? or is it a p38 (i'm a student) and is it correct to ask my manager or is there someone else i can contact because i work for royal mail but i;m employed by reed
Yet again you guys are SO HELPFUL! :T
If you are a student and will be untill next 5 April, are working only during your holidays, and expect to earn under £5225 you can sign a P38(s).
If you cannot sign a P38(s) then you need to get a P46 from your employer ( In your case Reed if they are paying you).
If you have had no taxable income between last 5 April and starting this job then tick box A and sign the P46. Return it to your employer and they can put you on 522L cumulative straight away. This will mean you get all tax back that you have paid on basic rate tax and if your earnings remain the same you will not pay tax for the rest of this tax year. If you are still working into next tax year you may be paying a small amount of tax, can't remember the allowances for next year.
If you cannot tick box A then tick Box B and you will be put on emergency tax this will give you a tax allowance of just over £100 a week and on these earnings you will pay just under a pound a week tax. When the tax office issue a cumulative code your tax will be recalculated and any overpayment refunded to you. Your tax due will depend on whether you had any taxable income prior to your current job so cannot be precise on this.
As to what reed rewards are you need to ask Reed about this.0 -
I think you might need to fill out both the p46 and the p38(s)
p46 tells the employer you have no other jobs in this tax year - that gets you off an emergency code and onto a regular one.
p38(s) means that even if you earn more than £105/week gross (where most people pay tax on the basis they are earning the same all year round) you won't pay any tax - you get a special tax code until your earnings for the year hit your tax free allowance.
You will still pay some NI though.
From the Reeds website -
"Reed Rewards
Reed offers all its Temporary Workers the opportunity to take advantage of Reed Rewards, which offers discounted insurance services, including private medical insurance. These insurance products are provided by leading companies, such as BUPA and Legal & General."

Sounds a load of bunkum to me, you might want to opt out - it was probably included in all the bumpf you signed when they took you on their books - but you can opt out for the future - there are very strict rules on deductions from earnings, they can't take anything without your consent (you might not get your £2.29 back but at least don't keep paying it).0 -
Ok yet again thanks for the great info!
Gutted because i;m not working between my holidays as its just a temporary job as i need money, i am still attending college and working at the same time so its not considered during the holiday time is it? or is it considered holiday?
I will contact reed anyway and see what they say and thnx!0 -
Holidays are considered to be the Christmas, Easter and Summer holidays in between each term.
If you are working weekends during term time it's not considered holidays.0 -
ok, i rang my employer reed and they give me a reference and a number and called hmrc or whoever they are called.
I talked to the person there and told them i had been working and that i am in the br tax bracket and need to be taken out and that i;m working part (explained it basically) they said ask my employer for a p45 or p46,
Thinking about it now my when i rung my employer they give me a reference so i wonder if i still need to ask... hmmm guess i will sort it tomorrow :P0 -
UPDATE - my employers had already got the details required just with it being the christmas the p4x's have not yet been processed so i;m in the clear and all good0

As people have said this is because you are probably on an 'emergency' tax code of 'BR'As well as basic rate, often referred to as 'emergency' tax
Can I please point out that BR is not the tax and when it is referred to as so it is referred incorrectly.:heartpuls baby no3 due 16th November :heartpulsTEAM YELLOWDFD 16/6/10"Shut your gob! £8.99/hour is a LOT.
Can you say the shop name you work at .... so we know where to go for high pay too.
It's always worth knowing which shops would pay the most so when we're looking for something we know who to target first.

Not quite sure what happened here:Can I please point out that BR is not the tax and when it is referred to as so it is referred incorrectly.
We can either blame it on a blonde moment or MSE gremlins but what I meant was:
