Employed by reed working for royal mail as a manual data entry keyer - keyeing in post codes towns and counties, simple enough but becomes very repatative and boring

Its only throughout the christmas time as they have so much mail but i dont know how it works outside of these holidays and they are asking for alot of overtime, they arent really picky who they get but if they overbook people its first come first served

    Extra:
    5.80 on saturday 9-5
    8.99 on sunday 10-10, (phwoar!)

    Nightshift was also 8.99 i think 10:30-6:30 mon-fri

Can I please point out that BR is not the emergency tax code and when it is referred to as so it is referred incorrectly

You are correct in saying that BR is not the emergency tax code as it is 522L Wk/Mth 1 which is. BR is the code used for 2nd incomes.

However many employers often use BR ( wrongly ) as an "emergency" tax. I know my son's employers did that on his first payslip even though he had handed in a P45. I suppose it meant a bigger rebate on his next payslip but they really should not be using it.

When a new employee starts, the employer (assuming it's the employee's only job) should either use the code from the P45 or 522L with Wk1/Mth1 suffix ( this being the proper emergency tax code).

However I have seen more and more cases of employers using the code BR for new employees until they are issued with a correct code.

Employers should ONLY use 522L M1 or otherwise when a P46 has been completed (box a or b) or a P45 states as such.

In the absence of either form BR should always be used.

Yes they SHOULD. However my son handed in a P45 with code 508L on it on 1st October. On the 15th October they issued his first pay using BR.

Pity employers don't seem to be following HMRC rules.

I think jem, that the problem is 1) they dont realise the importance of getting it right and 2) they always think they are anyway!!

I work in a payroll department of 16 staff (13,000 employees) and the level of knowledge is appalling. I have only been there 2 months and thankfuly will be handing in my notice next week but they seem to spend more time in debating who is right/wrong than actually getting it right!!

I thought at first they had used his details of over a year ago when he worked there on a summer placement and had BR as his code because he was also getting a pension from his late father's scheme.

However he told me that all the new starts were on BR.

Mind you I got it wrong too as I thought 522L needed the suffix of Wk/Mth 1 to be emergency code. Apparently 522L with or without the code is emergency code.

I can also see where BR is often referred to as the emergency code as in the absence of a P45 and a P46, the employer has to use BR. So it's being used in an "emergency basis".

    No wonder people are confused!

  • Well the reason i am on BR is because my employers who are sorting my p46 or whatever it is are to lazy (in a nut shell) to put it through, she told me its currently processing but as its christmas time people feel they can take a break and do things more slowly and that i will be rebated or something, so basically just have to wait...
