mumf said:I am with eon next. No direct debit! They e mail me just before the end of each month to remind me to send a meter reading. I do this through the app.A day later I get my bill,I pay it. Simple. No debt,no credit,I pay for what I use. It just takes a little bit of effort on my part.Hardly hard work!
I've done some estimated calculations on my current usage (E=2843kWh and G=8595kWh) and an October cap increase of 30% (these figures are what I might expect to pay with no change to my usage patterns (I am in the Northern region). They also assume none of the government help already announced or any further measures this summer).
1st October 22 bill £72.29 (last payment on current fix Eon Next Online v7)
1st November 22 bill £214.63 (first payment on April Cap + 30%)
1st December 22 bill £239.66
January 23 bill £270.60
February 23 bill £245.54
March 23 bill £198.57
April 23 bill £173.97 (compared to bill just raised of £80.78)
Basically I shall be paying over 100% more from November 22's payment compared to the previous year when on my present fix.
The spike for me when the next cap happens is eye-watering but factored in for the forthcoming tax year.0 -
I deleted my direct debit and haggled on the phone, they were fine, I now get an email each month reminding me of my dd, if I'm in credit they let me cancel it for that month, so you can speak to them0

No I can't reduce the DD payment amount either only increase it(!) its nearly tripled in price
Never been on a fixed tariff just Igloo thx to martin and well, you know the restBlessed are the geeks, for they shall inherit the Internet.1 -
How much credit do Eon insist that you keep on your account? Anyone know?
Our new fix is (V12) is due to start in a couple of weeks time, and our DD will increase to cover the next 12 months, on pretty accurate estimates (i'm not querying that).
However, at the end of our current fix, we will be in credit by about £250, as we've been overpaying our DD*
Just wondering if they'll let us have that back so we can start fresh at £0, or will they insist on having 2 DD's worth on account at all times, which would be just over that amount, until we've made a couple of new DD payments (with summer usage), so it needs to build up a credit, of say £500, then ask for £250 back.
*I don't want to reduce the DD, due to Santander cashback. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -
Unfortunately having an account hugely in credit is par for the course with energy companies I remember with Npower they kept putting up my DD and I kept having to contact them to reduce it, only for them to put it up again. I was many hundreds in credit it was like playing a game of see-saw up/down, up/down, up/down, drove me nutsBlessed are the geeks, for they shall inherit the Internet.0

We have been with Eon for a number of years now and they credit the built up amount every year. Not sure what month they do this for everyone else but when I queried this with them they said if there is any credit on our account it will be refunded to our bank account every August. Our last credited amount was £12.
Not sure this will still happen now they are known as Eonnext. Just don't get me started on Eonnext because they are driving me nuts!!

Now that could prove in interesting business model in the current climate, if continued!!!
Just when people are getting to the stage of NEEDING that credit for winter, they refund it!!
Like you say, not sure how Next will deal with it, going forward.
@edwink - Was August tied in with your "tariff year"?

Thanks all, i contacted Eon and they said because i was in credit i could reduce my payments down to £332 a month. i currently pay 275 which i upped myself in February but £332 is better than the £367 they wanted from me. I will continue to monitor and will contact them to reduce further if i remain in credit which i am sure i will be. I am sensible enough to know that i will need around £400 in credit to support winter usuage and am still working on lowering what we use in the first place.0

I actually queried the fact that they refunded me just before the Winter and our higher usage. I suggested that surely it would be better to keep the credit there until after the colder months and if in the Spring we were still in credit to refund the amount of credit then. But, I was told that our review was in August and any credit had to be refunded then.
It may be tied in with our tariff as our current tariff ends this August but that just might be a coincidence. I do normally try and fix the tariff if I can as soon as my current one ends.
