  • Well, after my almost a month of researching who to go with, which type to have and way to have it done I have finally made a decision. I am having my windows done by Windowsareus of Alcester/Stratford in Warwickshire. The reason being that I just trust the company more than any other so far as they have been totally straight with me, and tackled head on the issue of whether or not you have to have both top and bottom openers according to the regs when replacing a sash - and they were right, rather than just saying what they thought i wanted to hear or trying to scare me. They were also very competitive with their price and I am satisfied that the quality will be excellent. Also they are so confident that I will be happy with the job that they have agreed I can just pay a minimal deposit and the remainder of the balance after the job is done. I will post my before and after pictures and a final post after the job is done. Also I will post here a list of what I felt I needed to look out for, on completion however its only my non-opinion.
  • Incidentally I have finally opted for 1 opener for each window on ground floor level (bottom opener, trickle vent at top - as per regs) and top and bottom openers upstairs as the upstairs of house gets hot in winter, and ground floor cold in winter. Top opener for the standard bathroom window + UPVC door.
  • OK folks drumroll please................I have finally had my windows replaced. I am very happy with the finished result. All my neighbours are jelous. They are very much in keeping with the original style of the building having the georgian bar, and being recessed. The company I used were very professional and diligent and very respectful of my property. • By the way if anyone wants the details of the company I used or any info on my quote or what to look for please let me know. I was happy with both the price and the quality.

I would like to know please. I've been following this thread with interest.

I'm not in the market for these things just at the moment but I expect to be in about 12-18 months provided it is not too expensive. Meanwhile I'm trying to gather as much info as possible.

The new door is hung from the opposite side of the frame compared to the original door.
"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"
  • Glad to hear that you are happy with the results and thanks for sharing pics with us.

I have to be honest. Personally, I prefer the old wooden sliding sashes. UPVC in an old property is not attractive in my eyes and having mock sashes when everyone else (or at least next door) have sliding sashes, is not pretty. Sorry, I know it is not what you want to hear, but the important thing is that you are happy and got a good deal. :)

but the orig poster is over the moon so each to their own.Beauty is in the eye of the beholder i guess :)
If they don't intend to move then any dip on house value can be tken with a pinch of salt.

Wow very observant !! The original doors for these houses (I believe) opened into the lounge so that as you walk in you can only see the wall. Well that is how most of my neighbours doors open anyhow, and the marks on my old frame seem to indicate this was the case with my property too. But the door I have lived with since I bought the house opened the other way (in towards the wall) meaning that as you walk into the lounge (the front door opens straight into the lounge) everyone passing by and neighbours can see straight into your lounge. So I wanted it changing back to the previous, original way of opening for privacy.

Next door has basic UPVC not sash or even imitation sash. There are very few original sash windows remaining in the street to be honest.
