Neighbours humming hot tub

  • It sounds awful, Shibby - but don't let it escalate into some sort of tit-for-tat thing: no one comes out of those sort of wars without some sort of PTSD, as it were.
Get a few friends and family members round (individually,so they're not accidentally influencing each other) to get a feel for whether you're simply more sensitive to the sound than other people, or if everyone is picking up on it.
Keep on good terms (as much as possible) with your neighbour: if they feel beseiged, they're less likely to be reasonable and to try to come up with a compromise.
And as others have said, the increase in gas and electricity prices might scare them into turning it off more frequently than turning it on.
Good luck - keep us informed how it goes.

  • If it's that bad it will probably break soon anyway. Vibration doesn't do the pump any good.

@Woolsery when I messaged I didn't blame them at all. I asked very politely if the hot tub had been turned on yet, that I was hearing a noise that I had never heard before and I wasn't 100% sure if it was the tub or not. Could we rule it out by turning it off for 5 minutes to to make sure? I didn't feel I criticised or attacked. I offered to pay for matting or for it to be looked at.

It's not that you are confrontational but more the fact that their new expensive hot tub might be causing an issue. . People then react on instinct, normally in a bad way.
Hopefully once they have time to think it through they will be more receptive to your suggestions.

This^ I was not suggesting you'd done anything wrong, but your reaction to my post shows just how easily messages may be misinterpreted. The human reaction to any unwelcome development typically goes through stages as new info has to be absorbed, processed and then either acted upon in some positive way or waved away in some form of denial.
  • Just had a thought, at the moment there is no fence and to block off our side they have the old fence propped against the decking. I'm wondering if this is actually what is making the noise and when the old fence goes the noise will go to? Fingers crossed as its loose wood!
