How much storage have you used thus far ? You really should already be backing it up but of course that may be for the future.

Things break. Backups should be obvious. Multiple backups even better but less so.

Get a usb hard drive for backups at least. Any known brand is fine. It's more USB sticks where there are dodgy ones anyway.

If it's just the screen you should be able to use your tv as a monitor to do a backup. A HDMI lead will work for most laptops these days.

just been looking at hard drives, they seem to be quite expensive.
would a memory card or micro sd card do the job?

    something like these maybe

SD cards and USB sticks have a much higher failure rate. Argos way overpriced for that stuff. You only buy that
stuff from there when you need it right now and cannot wait for for the postman.

Are you comparing a 32GB memory card to a TB hard drive?   240GB SSD for £21  (Adata, Kingston or Integral)
£3 for an adapter cable to plug the drive into a USB port if you need portability.

You may not need a 240GB drive? so even cheaper?

Can you give me a link for the ssd card.

I thought the ssd card had to be inserted into the computer after taking the base off

can you see the screen using an external display ? If not you're not going to copy the data/info to elsewhere

and after answering the above you can then determin how much storage you need for your backup and then better than an SSD (solid state DRIVE) it will be better to by a usb powered external hard drive. SSDs are great but prone to fail without warning. Hard drive tend to fail gently i.e. with some warning. No point in making a backup for it just to disappear without warning.
You might consider it a relatively expensive option but it can be used for all future backups and backup updates.
Quick check (not a specific recommendation) but just £34 https://www.ebuyer.com/649842-verbatim-1tb-store-n-go-usb-3-0-portable-hard-drive-53023

Higher rate? I doubt it. But when they fail they fail without warning maybe that is a point. (backup use would be occasional so SD especially and UAb not as much but somewhat would be fine (SSD suffer from the same so....)
Agree about GB to TB. Though who knows!
