We need to replace Mum’s patio doors. We’ve had a quote from Everest of £6,125. This will be for a double outward opening UPVc set of french doors set into the space where there are some double glazed tilt and slide panels. There will be criss cross bars on the windows to make them look like they are made up of small window panes like a 1930s french window, giving the image of 15 “individual panes” per door. There will be polished gold effect straight modern handles. The doors will have Everest’s 20 year guarantee and have some kind of Police security stamp allocated to them. There will be wood effect skins on the doors, white on the inside, green on the outside. I know that Everest charge a lot but does anyone have an idea of how the quote of £6,125 compares?

If it's Everest then yes, you've been had. Really, you'd be much better finding a local independent window/double-glazing firm. The likes of Everest have to pay for loads of staff, salesmen, swanky advertising, etc., on top of which they have to make a massive profit to appease their shareholders and bean-counters. Whereas your local family-run outfit just wants to make good products for a reasonable price (they live or die by their local reputation), and are only looking to make a reasonable rather than an outlandish profit.Get a quote from a couple of local firms - I'm pretty sure you'll be rather surprised at the difference.7

Check that any warranty is insurance backed. There have been situations where companies have gone bust and their warranties were useless because they did not have insurance backing. That check is required wherever you purchase.

Haha I remember when I had a quote from Everest for windows & when they quoted an eye watering amount I told them I would be getting a quote from a local firm. The sales guy told me "Now our prices will be more than an local independent firm because we manufacture everything ourselves so we have to pay for the whole production process. A local firm only has to buy the product & install. Its not something that the customer thinks about but it basically means our prices are often higher than local, independent companies".
I pointed out that if they manufacture everything then they should be the cheapest as they don't have to pay a third party during the process like a independent retailer would.... he then asked why I would think that. I replied by telling him I was a cost accountant in an engineering firm & that we manufacture specialist fasteners. I then proceeded to explain, we are able to keep costs down as we make everything in house whereas our competitors often have to buy a part made product & their price ends up being a lot more than ours.
He then excused himself & left.9 -
We recently had a window converted to something similar to what you are looking but not quite so fancy. It also included removing the wall below the window and making everything good again with the plaster etc on the inside.
We paid £1250 from a local independent window fitter.2 -

If he left you with that price, he probably didn't have a chance to 'speak to his manager'6

Just for comparison, we just had a quote that came in only slightly higher than that for a single patio door, composite front door and four large sash windows, so that does seem steep!1

Its stupidly steep to allow for commission levels and national adverts. Ask o local Facebook groups for your area for recommendations and get at least 3 quotes in, then decide what to do with the rest of the cash that you nearly paid out.We had a standard window converted into a full height window with 6 panels, 2 of which were large tilt and turn openers. It's not a French door, but it was £950 with tilt & turn or £850 with standard. This included taking out the bricks etc. French doors probably a touch more work but not 5 grand more work.1
