Interesting article on Vista SP1 - "
Vista comes of age with Service Pack 1
http://www.computing.co.uk/computing/news/2205619/vista-comes-age-service-pack-3706812
and how the big companies actually wait for SP1 before they buy.
I would think MS couldn't get it out quick enough...
and of course it must appear before XP SP3.
why? because
http://blog.wired.com/monkeybites/2007/11/windows-xp-serv.html
the final service pack for XP speeds it up by a whopping 10%,
while the Vista SP makes no difference to its speed...
Gonna be a long 2008 for the Vista boys...

It's not always upon SP1 being released. Usually 6 months or so after release to give adequate time to trial it. It also depends what you do, and if you really need it. Most businesses will typically switch upon upgrading hardware.
We've already adopted it without upgrading hardware. It's very good. I use Linux at home, but run Vista within Linux using only 1gb for development work.
I don't think SP3 will speed up XP in general terms. As mentioned in the article it may only be for certain things such as Office 2007 (as it's built for Vista)."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
Downloading it now. I may never be able to post again.
Actually, its on another PC."I'm not even supposed to be here today."0 -

Test versions of SP1 have been around sometime but strictly limited to certain partners and professionals of MS, although they seem to have leaked onto the net.
As a professional I wouldn't start using Vista on mission critical systems until SP1 has proven itself to be stable, but some companies switch immediately, some wait until new hardware, some wait until another new OS is released before adopting the one before. I work with some large corporates who still use W2K primarily on their systems, recently starting an upgrade to XP. It depends on the policy and scale of the business, and how cutting edge you are, need to be, and how much money and time you have to spend.
XP Pro is reasonably stable, and with a new SP due soon, it's working life will be much extended, the major incompatibility and some issues still with Vista, affects many potential users, hence why MS have lengthened the Vista life-span, hopefully when SP1 is released it'll be more like it should have been in the first place.
Applications are much more important to me than OSes, I choose the app first, the OS second, so use Macs and PCs constantly, as some software is better on one than another.

I can't say I've had any problems with Vista other than waiting for Acer to ship it to me via their free upgrade programme. I use Office 2007, Visual Studio 2005/8, SQL Server 2005 Dev edition on it and little else so I'm probably a special case.
I use Vista at work as well with the same tool set and it's absolutely fine. It's better than XP ever was prior to SP2.
Vista SP1 will fix a few little niggles I have but that's about it.£8k to pay off before Jan 2011! Was 28k to pay off by Jan 2010 though so I'm happy

Been using XP SP3 for a while now... Mainly due to problem I had with USB 2.0 external HDD. It constantly would power off and when it returned would only connect at 1.1 speeds. Got invited because I had contacted MS a few times regarding it and tried thier hotfix that didnt work.. Although I will say SP3 sorted it and the drive has given me no problems for 11 days now.. I have been assured there will be a final version well before the expire date of the beta as I told them I wasnt installing it if I had to reformat.0

Please dont get too excited about Vista SP1. I've had it for a while in RC format, and there is not a lot different at all. TBH I found it more unstable than no service pack. Could just be because it's a RC though, so will wait and see.:rolleyes:0

i think whether xp or vista is the best is irrelevant because all new pcs have vista and it wont be long i guess before you cant get xp anywhere. so xp will disappear unless people have super duper pcs that are going to last forever.0

XP doesn't have to stick to the PC it's installed on and you can still presently buy new PCs with XP."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

I don't think it's irrelevant at all, you can specify XP as the OS from Dell, and several other small companies.
It's probably only irrelevant for home users who don't know the options, or don't have the knowledge to swap or install another OS.0
