I upgraded to the offical SP1 RC release yesterday, it works OK so far. I think readyboost seems to work properly after resume now which helps. Only difference I've noticed so far.

I don't think it's irrelevant at all, you can specify XP as the OS from Dell, and several other small companies.

It's probably only irrelevant for home users who don't know the options, or don't have the knowledge to swap or install another OS.

yeah, it still has life in it but eventually even the likes of dell wont do it.

Same could be said of any OS including Vista. XP will still be supplied to system builders for over a year yet.

true, but do you think vista would get abandoned before the older xp?
  • XP will lose support first, but not for a while longer yet
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical

No but it's got a long support life yet and so I think it's perfectly valid to compare XP and Vista and I don't consider it moot at all as XP will not only be supported for years to come (so lots of opportunity for transferring XP yourself to the newest PCs) but it will still be available to buy retail and with new PCs for a while yet. People may debate that it would be best going from XP to Vienna rather than going through the Vista route. If we all went completely sequentially no matter what the state of the OS then we'd have all lived through the nightmare of installing ME after 98/2000.

Well of course not... but I'd hedge my bets than XP is still supported by Microsoft just before Vienna / Blackcomb is released, or at least in RC/beta stages. MS have had a nightmare with Vista, and have massively increased the support framework and timescale for XP.

Superscaper makes some excellent points. I agree that many people won't move to Vista. Just like many have had W2K for ages, who are now planning on moving to Vista.

Same with other OSes, many people won't move from Mac OS X Tiger to Leopard as Tiger is such a stable and mature OS, many will wait and jump to the next version, whatever big cat they decide to call that. I'm not planning on upgrading any of mine to Leopard at the moment, but have tested it.

And Vienna (supposedly) isn't going to be as big a leap from Vista as Vista is from XP so it'll be a more experienced run in of the technologies and I believe it will also have quite a few features that were originally planned for Vista but never made it for one reason or another. Apparently extended support for XP will last until 2014.
