Vista Service Packs - the problem of scale

I was just thinking about the delays with the release of Vista SP1.

I believe the size of SP1 is huge, about 1 Gigabyte.
- about the size of XP apparently.

It's going to be remarkably difficult to release a bug free version,
simply because of the size of the thing.

I commented a few months ago that the service pack would be huge, only to be lambasted by a few MoneySavers who thought they knew better. :rotfl:

MS partners and consultants testing the beta at the moment (release 0.275), have been given it as a 687Mb patch. So the final SP-1 release is likely to be a similar size, I'd say hopefully no more than 750Mb, but at final release it may shrink (here's hoping). However they may well split it into smaller chunks.

For people on limited download allowances, it'll be quite a chunky download in the Spring.
  • i hate vista with i fiery vengeance... i gave up and went to a cracked version of xp profissional 64... 200 meg!! tiny! my comp has never run so smooove.

i have a legit copy of xp pro, so i dont condone cracked software etc :)

but if theres a gig of fixes with the first service pack, just goes to show how shoddy the first production copy was!

Hopefully they will do a free CD version of the service pack like with Win XP SP2.

That would be good if they do it on CD.

I think I mentioned last time you posted about this that it's likely to be so big because it has to include everything whereas the incremental downloaded updates won't necessarily be as large. In fact I found this:

"The download for Vista SP1 will be smaller than that of XP SP2, weighing in at about 50 Mbytes to XP SP2's 120 Mbytes. Vista SP1 also will be available through Windows Server Update Services, as a standalone one-gigabyte software package (larger because it includes full software components instead of only incrementally changed file portions), and through computer manufacturers once the final version is released."

Until the final release is made through the windows updater we can't say for sure how large the actual download is likely to be.
