Travelling to USA for 3 weeks in June.
What’s the cheapest way to call the UK?
Buy a local SIM in America or find a UK provider with cheap/free roaming?
Cheapest UK provider I can find is 3 who want to charge £5 for each day I need to call home!

If you're within wifi you can use WhatsApp to call. No need to get go and get ripped off from the phone companies!

The £5/day doesn't (yet) apply for 3 PAYG sims.

Three website states it won't charge until 23nd May.

    OP is going in June.
  • I think all Lebara plans include international minutes free calling, May be worth getting a sim from them.

That's international calling from UK, not while roaming.
    Evolution, not revolution

At the moment there are no announced plans for 3 to apply daily charges for PAYG roaming (although surely it must come).
"You won’t need to pay for this until 23 May 2022, as we’re waiving the charge until then. If you’re on Pay As You Go, or your Pay Monthly plan started before 1 October 2021, these charges won’t apply"

Thanks, I initially read that as 'PAYG or contract' started before 1 Oct.
But PAYG doesn't really have a start date, so makes more sense now.

As someone said, you can use WhatsApp - but only to call other WhatsApp users and you'd need wi-fi. If you want to call people other than those on WhatsApp you could get a Sipgate account and call any number you like in the UK at about 1p per minute to a landline and you'd need wi-fi of course again.
