I get called Mrs even though I’ve never been married. There seems to still be a presumption that once you teach a certain age then you must be married.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

From experience, a Mrs addressed as a Miss is more likely to get cross than vice versa.
Before Mrs/Miss came into use, any adult female would be addressed as Mistress - same as adult men are now always Mr regardless of their marital status.

My wife uses her maiden name, as said above, only change was in notifying who was recipient of pension benefits.
We were lucky in that we both quit our jobs and had an extended honeymoon so came back with new jobs so no paperwork to amend.
Only some family and friends ever address my wife by my surname. Sadly in the current climate that's not a bad thing.
May you find your sister soon Helli.
    Sleep well.

Yes, pensions because it is likely to be relevant to things such as death in service benefits and you may also want to review your options - in particularly whether you want to change or update your statement of wishes as regards the beneficiaries. I think also it can affect their estimate of your future pension and you can usually nominate whether you would want a widows/widowers pension paid to your spouse if you die first, so it's worth checking that your plans are up to date in that regard.
I think for insurance etc most don't differentiate between married and cohabiting couples so I would update when you next renew and are asked to tick a box.
Drs - while 'next of kin' doesn't have any legal force, in practice updating them may make it easier for the other to get information etc if one of you were to be hospitalized or seriously ill,

All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)
  • I didn't change my name.  I get a mixture of all 3 titles, for me all of these need changing to have just one as men only use 1, have Mr.

I was quite surprised at peoples reaction to me not changing my name, from being tutted at to asking me if I was 'allowed to do that' or if it was legal not too.

This bugs me SO much. 'Did your husband allow it?'

As it's not my husband's name, he didn't get a choice.

For the original post - I am married and still Miss Maiden Name (I quite enjoy that if you try to work out my marital status from my name you will be wrong).

The only problem I have had is that some forms won't allow you to select "married" and "Miss" and insist on it being Mrs. It once caused me an issue because the form then didn't match my photo ID but it was sorted.

In a couple of years I should be Dr Maiden Name and it will solve that issue altogether.

I have been Dr Maiden name for over 3 decades, it doesn't really always solve the problem as people still call me Mrs Maiden name, including the hospital where I used to work  :#
