Also it dose not explain the amount of electricity I seem to be using. Finally how do do I go about claiming  from previous suppliers if the meter has been overcharging me. since 2014, this is the point of this post
Short answer to that is you don't.
There is no way to recover anything from that long ago even if you had proof that the problem existed at the time, it is just too late to do anything about that.
I still think we will find a different explanation for the current meter reading differences, that is a red herring as far as the motivation for trying to reclaim for a meter error.
We can certainly do more to explore the actual accuracy of the meter now and figure out where it is all going if it is accurate, did you want to start down that path?

What the video says is what I have alleyways done. Shell are reading at their end so god knows what they are reading.
Are you able to display multiple registers as well as the 'Total Import' number though?
At the minimum you should see the total and an R01 number, it would be helpful to confirm if they are the same?

  • Much as I thought but I do happen to have a complicate monthly record of all energy use between 2014 -2020
  • they have asked me send them photos of the meter one week apart to see if there is a difference between what the meter says at my end and their end with a view a to fitting a new smect 2 meter

That is great data to have, but just as a quick and easy test, why don't we check the accuracy of your meter now?
You have a working IHD I believe?
So all you need is a high usage resistive load like an immersion heater, or any other electric heater or even just a kettle...
You just need to turn everything else off, doing it at the consumer unit is probably the easiest and just leave the one circuit with the device you are test with turned on.
Make sure the IHD shows no current consumption then turn on the device and see if the figure the IHD shows, matches the rating of the load?
May be easiest to do this in daylight, and do make sure you safely turn off the gas boiler before the test, don't just cut the power.

Great, so you've been pressing "6" to get the R01 through R04 readings? It's just that you said earlier you've been pressing "9".
Can you tell us what the R01 through R04 readings are?

  • I That may work  if I through the main switch on the consumer unit but it wouldn't  tell me if the meter were measuring 1.1kw if I were using 1kw. Shell have offered me a check meter but It would cost £270 if there was no no fault.  Best is a  new Smect 2 meter.  I wounder what Shell will do when they read the meter themself s  and find that it's 5500 odd lower than last months reading.
  • The girl in the video said push 9 and read r01 and if on economy 7 press 6 and read r01 and r02.  I normally read from mu hand held unit  which because I don't have  economy 7 I never look at. But having looked at before I think I can see what Shell have may  done. They have read 6 r01 because it agrees with the reading the gave me on the phone IE  55000 odd KWH I am confused

    Progress.
You may not have E7 but at some point it looks like you have been on a tariff that used R02 and I suspect that is where you will find the difference between your two readings.
Were you ever on a promotional tariff with British Gas? They used the 2nd register for their early smart meter incentive plan which gave free hours at the weekend.
You might want to check R02 as well just to confirm that is where the missing units are recorded.
Could you list which suppliers you have been with since that meter was installed?

May want to have a look at your records, if you have meter readings there you may be able to spot where the error occurred.
In particular check the first switch where you moved from a supplier who could read the meter to one that couldn't...
