Refunds from multiple suppliers

Options
In 2014 I had a smart meter installed by OVO and being an energy tart I have being swapping  suppliers every tear or two to get the best rates I could.  Now some of suppliers have gone bust but until last last October  I had always got out in time.
Over the years because none of the small suppliers could read the smart meter so I had to send them monthly readings.
I am now refuge from pure planet with Shell.  My electric use seemed very high but since my FIT more than paid my bill I wasn't that bothered. So I asked Shell to install a SMECT2 Meter because they said that they couldn't my smect1 meter.
They then said that they could read it and in a phone conversation about consumption that their reading was 55812kwh whilst the reading from the meter at my end was 61477kwh. 5665kwh higher. So the question is, if it turns out that I have paid this, how do I manage to claim refunds from the multiple suppliers and now bust ones or claim from OVO for  fitting a duff meter

Are you looking at the portable IHD or the meter on the wall?

This is usually the result of one party reading the 'Total Import' and the other reading 'Reg01'
The difference is usually the result of Reg02 being used at some point with one or more of the suppliers.
The two most common causes of that are being on an E7 tariff at some point, or having been with British Gas during their 'free weekends' promotion.
Odds are the meter is fine, just the wrong registers being compared.

  • Hi I am reading the total import which is the the same on the remote hand set and on the first register after button 9 on the meter is pushed as told to do by OVO in 2014. I don't know what Shell are reading. The real problem how to claim a refund?

If your total import and reg01 reading are the same, are you sure Shell have the right meter number ?
Check your bill and make sure the meter number is correct as there isn't anything else for Shell to be reading that would be different if the total and reg-01 are the same...
Need to sort this out before trying to work out if you have been overcharged, and frankly it is unlikely as the reading you are seeing on your own meter is most likely correct, it is the Shell reading that is suspect.

  • It's hard to understand how a 4 bed house with 3 people living it  and 6 KW of PV can rack up 8500 KW PA

How do you heat the house?
Even 6kWp of solar isn't going to help much with heating over winter...

Then agreed, that is a lot of power over the last 7-8 years, and certainly worth investigating further, but need to get the meter reading difference sorted first as there isn't any way for your meter to be giving a different reading to the ones you see on the meter, it only has the same registers to use so something else is wrong with what Shell are telling you...

Watch this video. It shows you how to read the four registers R01 to R04 (she only mentions R01 and R02 but there are two more). It's quite likely that the total import is split across two or more of the registers, and Shell are only reading one of them.

  • What the video says is what I have alleyways done. Shell are reading at their end so god knows what they are reading.  Also it dose not explain the amount of electricity I seem to be using. Finally how do do I go about claiming  from previous suppliers if the meter has been overcharging me. since 2014, this is the point of this post
