Another thing to consider, it may be cheaper to have unlimited minutes on your mobile, rather than the option on your landline.

E.g. Asda mobile have a £4 month option, and doing that means the SIM is more likely to stay active.

As above O2 Classic (not clear if £10 per 6 months is required, conflicting info)

Is the conflict between what O2's website says (need 6mth topup) and people's actual experience? I've held off activating a new Classic sim because of the website info.

The website is not correct and as years go by is never corrected, perhaps they hope people believe it.

    Thanks for the responses/help.
Found the old phone, gave it a charge, and it seems to be working.
As far as I can see, RWG looks like the most promising option, but I have encountered difficulties when trying to purchase the 'Free Bundle' - It asks for a mobile number, and the only one I have is the long since inactive one on my phone; I put this in (?!), and got through to the payment stage, but, unfortunately, this is PayPal. I had a PayPal account for many years, but had to close it when they made provision of a mobile number mandatory, so I opted for payment withought a PayPal account, but this still seems to be done by PayPal, and it asks for (yep, you guessed it!) a mobile number, as they will send a security code...
I seem to be stuck, but notice similar difficulties in one of the threads linked by @k_man, so I'll email RWG to see what they suggest.

Iv been with rwg for 10 months now. You can top up at a paypoint store. Ask for a now mobile top up.
When i joined u didnt need to top up for the free bundle

Indeed.  I've had the O2 Classic since it first came out and it does not require the 6 month £10 top up.

Mine (and my wife's) are still working fine.  You only need to make the one chargeable call every 6 months.

I also have the O2 classic sim. What you are over looking is if you don’t make the odd phone call or do a sim text your allowance builds up over time. £20 1st year, £40 2nd year and so on. Why would you want that unless of course you have no one to call.

How does the balance build up?
    Unless you are topping up.

You need to top up every 6 months, so if you are topping up and not using the phone the balance will build up, no?
Anyway looks like you can't get the classic sim anymore.
