Gigaclear renewal price haggling successes anyone?

We're approaching the end of our 18 month initial contract with gigaclear - we're on 300mb with two of their velop wifi things, and we've been paying £29/mo

I rang them to see if we could get a better deal than the £49/mo auto renew..

The best I can get from them is £39 for continuing as we are or £34 for 300mb with ONE velop - ie we have to give them one back???? (or £35 for 200mb with one velop!!)

Anyone done better than that recently? I don't want to have to pony up an extra £10 a month in the current climate!!!

I'm guessing that you are on Gigaclear fibre infrastructure rather than Openreach, in which case they are probably the only provider on the network which probably reduces your bargaining power to virtually zero as you cant use anyone else.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

Have you checked if Openreach serve your area also?

Yes, we’re on gigaclear fibre, openreach don’t offer fibre here. What’s surprising is the neighbours say they managed to renew at £20 for 300mb... i have no idea how!!

Oh I see. When it's Openreach, there are more "competitors" when it comes to negotiation. If the neighbour managed it, maybe it's a case of keep pressing and ultimately even leave to rejoin. They all want our money at the end of the day.
  • I too was wary of this. No good for the OP I'm afraid, but for others it might be an idea to to call a few months before your contract expires and upgrade for a few extra quid. At least that locks in another 18 month term at a similar fixed price, for faster speed.
  • I read somewhere that if you wait till your or of contract that you can sign up to the deals as a new customer? No idea if there's any truth in that though
  • You can cancel and open a new 300Mb/s account for £24.
    I negotiated 500Mb/s for £42.
  • You don't need 2 of their (very poor) routers. By another manufacturer's one and link it.
  • I've just signed up with Gigaclear for £29 a month on their top package (18m contract) aware that it will jump to £80 a month after the contract. Im hoping I can negotiate a lower price nearer the time.

While gigaclear have no direct competition with regards to other fibreoptic providers, Satellite Broadband provided by Starlink provides 100mbps speeds for £75 and could be competitive if you are facing that sort of bill hike.

If your ISP are unchallenged by competitors in your area , if they effectively have the only network capable of the speeds you require, it shouldn’t come as a shock that they don’t need to particularly negotiate on price , especially with renewals rather than new business, once they have you they don’t need to try so hard , even if you don’t renew, the network will still exist in your property, ready for another occupant, or even yourself if you decline to renew this year but consider taking it again in the future.

Ultimately you will have a choice , you renew at whatever the best price they offer ( if price is the only factor in your decision making ) , or you take service from someone else ( or don’t have service at all ) , it’s of no consequence to you , if new customers get a better deal , or if someone renewing in an area with competitors gets a better offer than you , it’s no real guide  , you ‘negotiate’ and if the best price they offer isn’t acceptable, you quit their service , if it’s acceptable ( but not as good as you would like )  you take it , no one puts a gun to your head , it’s your choice.
