Will you lose the single person allowance from the local council?
Currently it depends on the council; some you will lose the discount, some you keep the discount and others you will lose the discount after 3 or 6 months if the refugee stays with you.
However, given the politics of what's happening with Ukraine, I wouldn't be surprised if all councils were pressured by both the government and residents to extend the current exemptions so that Ukrainian refugees are disregarded when assessing the single person discount.

Yes, but.... You may still qualify for a reduction if the Ukrainian guest(s) is claiming benefits or has zero income. On the plus side, this £350 payment appears to be tax free, although I don't know if that is in addition to other tax breaks such as the Rent a Room allowance.

It's strange that the government did not encourage us to do something similar for Syrian refugees.

    No, not those ones.
Ukraine is in Europe and has much closer ties to the UK. Rightly or wrongly, most people care more when the issues are closer to home.

I read that it won't change your council tax status.

And what vetting is going to be done about the people offering their homes to vulnerable individuals?  What's to stop a dealer/criminal/pimp/people trafficker/sleazy individual from opening their door and then not being "nice"?

One family interviewed said they had previously given refuge to a Syrian and an Iranian.

https://www.refugeesathome.org/# have been operating for many years.

Previous refugee crisis have not been on the scale of the Ukrainian crisis. Many of these refugees will want to return to their country if possible.

There's a Q&A about this in the Daily Mail - pinch of salt perhaps needed!
