Santander Payment Authentication Changes

I have complained to Santander as they are effectively limiting from whom I can purchase but they have been useless and offered no solution.
Thanks

Is anyone else having this issue or have a solution as I am unable to buy things from major retailers at present and have no solution.
Your post is focusing on using a debit card. What about using a credit card instead - will that solve your problem?

Thanks for their reply. I’m not sure exactly what 3d authentication is but this what Santander are telling me they’ve changed to that the merchants need to be compliant with. If the merchant is not then payments are refused. In terms of a credit card I don’t have one with Santander so don’t know if this would make any difference. I have had success with a Barclaycard but obviously that’s not Santander. I don’t know if it was successful because it’s a credit card or because it’s not Santander.0

I received an email today containing the below. Is it this you are referring to?
"We’re making your online card transactions even more secure. You may soon start to notice an increase in the number of times you’re asked to authorise online card payments using your Mobile Banking app or with a One Time Passcode (OTP) which is sent to the mobile phone number you have asked us to use for OTPs. If you’ve been asked in the past to authorise online card payments by entering an OTP or by approving in your mobile banking app then this won’t change, however going forward you will be asked to do so more often...
... All online card payments need to be checked to see if extra verification is needed but some retailers may need more time to put this in place. We hope it won’t be long before everyone’s ready, if a retailer isn’t ready, there could be times when your card is declined"#660 -
Its not just santander either, i have had a similar email from halifax as well in regards to my credit card. It'm my understanding its steps the banks are being asked to take in order to push the remaining merchants whom have not completed the changes as yet to get on with the updates.
To help keep you and your accounts safer from fraud when you use your debit or credit card to shop online, we’ll ask you more often to confirm it’s really you making the payment. All banks and retailers have been preparing for these extra checks as part of the Payment Services Regulations. You might have already seen this happening when you shop online, and it’ll happen more often from now on.
As some retailers may not be ready for the changes yet, you may sometimes see a declined transaction when shopping online over the next few months. If this happens and you’re already set up using one of the ways below, then don’t worry – it’s not likely to be a problem with your card. The retailer should be ready soon, and you can get in touch with them to see if they have another way to pay.
there is some more information here https://www.cardinalcommerce.com/content-hub/mandates/psd2-sca/uk-extends-deadline-for-enforcement-of-psd2-sca which explains: "According to the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the deadline for enforcing PSD2 SCA requirements in the UK will now be extended six months from September 14, 2021 to March 14, 2022.The extension allows for more time to ensure minimal disruption to merchants and consumers. The new deadline is however expected to be upheld - and full SCA compliance on digital transactions will be enforced beginning March 14, 2022 in the UK.
PSD2, the European Banking Authority’s (EBA) 2nd Payment Service Directive, is designed to drive payment innovation and data security. SCA (Strong Customer Authentication) is a requirement of PSD2. The ultimate goal of SCA is to keep digital commerce secure and consumers safe.
As a reminder, other regions have already implemented SCA beginning December 31, 2020. It is, as always, strongly recommended that all parties continue to move forward with plans to meet the requirements of the new deadline.

Retailers with an online presence need to ensure they fully support Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) by 14 March 2022 or risk customer purchases being declined.
SCA is a new set of rules from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to help protect customers from fraud when they are shopping online. With increasing amounts of purchases being made online, these new rules will help to ensure that customers are safe when shopping and their money is better protected...From 18 January card issuers will start declining some non-compliant transactions, with all non-compliant transactions being declined after the 14 March deadline. Retailers are therefore strongly urged to ensure readiness by 18 January 2022 as SCA requests will be stepped up from this date to avoid a cliff edge implementation.
