A tenant who has issues with their neighbour - please help

    I do sympathise, this sounds as though you are having a horrible time in your first home together and are both miserable.

    There is this The Noise App - Report Noise Nuisance which some, but not all, local authorities ask people to use to record the noise that neighbours are subjecting them to and can be used to report directly to council staff or to create your own independent record. 

    Sadly, the fastest solution to your situation is to move away from this neighbour who's causing the problem, which is very unfair but true.

    Thank you for your reply but that tells me nothing in terms of how far into the tenancy they are. Given the actions they have already taken they could be 4 months into the term already, maybe longer.

    Hm... like what? As I said:
    Options are
    * convince landlord to evict neighbour. Could potentially use S8 (G14). Difficult to convince LL. Difficult for LL to convince court. Takes time.
    * Persuade LL to agree an Early Surrender of your tenancy, and move elsewhere
    * ............
    *......

    The OP said from a month in they realised there were problems, since then they have contacted the neighbour to try and resolve it, then spoken to the landlord, the landlord has then spoken to the tenant and then wrote them a letter, and now it's started again.
    The reason I ask is, depending how far they are into the tenancy, it might be worth trying to resolve it or stick with the ear plugs for the few remaining months.  We need the OP to confirm.

    Camel310, let me start with saying that I am really sorry about what you’re going through. I am very familiar with this issue myself as I used to have a neighbour whose loud music used to give me anxiety attacks.

    Looks like the neighbour is a mean type too. Why would anyone react like that to you politely asking to keep it down. It’s beyond my understanding 🙄 

    It’s a shame that your landlord is not understanding how bad the issue is for you. Or most likely they just can’t be asked to get involved. 

    Try complaining to the council. Depending on where you live they can be very helpful (or not! In my case Islington Council didn’t care whatsoever). Sometimes a council representative speaking to the neighbour will make them more considerate. 

    If the issue persist, ask your landlord for early surrender. They will likely not easily agree but be persistent - you will have to cover re-advertising costs, rent difference etc but your mental health is worth so much more.

    Hm... like what? As I said:

    I've explained.
    I'd like to think that if I were a LL, I'd respond to such a complaint about a tenant. For all the effort it would take, I'd visit the victim and see if their complaint was justified. If it was, I'd give the miscreant tenant a warning. I suspect that's all it would take.
    In the current clime of house shortages and high rents, I think you'd be nuts to let yourself be at risk of being thrown out.
