PS. Penners324.... I have had a look at other banks Apps. VM, NatWest and Santander all can run on OS 7.0, does that mean they are insecure? I am not techie, so will defer to your greater knowledge.
The current version (7.15.0) of the Natwest app requires at least iOS 12
It's Android OS 7.0 and up so perhaps the OP is actually referring to Android? The world is overflowing with cheap Android handsets.

You have lots and lots of alternatives with banks which don't rely on app-only banking.
We do for now.  The push to get us all using apps is a source of constant annoyance to me as I don't currently have a phone that will allow any.  (in the midst of trying to upgrade...)

But the lack of physical branches and the lack of long term alternatives like the post office will effectively ultimately disenfranchise many who cannot afford the ever changing tech.

Android 7.0 up is supported but IOS is 12 upwards.
    https://www.chase.co.uk/gb/en/product/chase-account/ and https://www.chase.co.uk/gb/en/support/downloading-the-chase-app/ both say
Your smartphone will need to run iOS 14 and above, or have access to Google Play on Android 8.1 and above

Chase requires Android 8, as you pointed out in your opening post referring to OS 8 when you only had 7. NatWest is obviously happy with Android 7.

Penners342's point about obsolete systems being insecure was made when he/she thought you were talking about Apple OS 7, not Android 7.

The term OS, when used for mobiles or tablets, is generally used for Apple devices (purists might say it should be iOS, but it is often just OS, annoying I know!).  For Android the usual term is Android plus the number, e.g. Android 7.

So using OS and a number when you mean Android plus a number can confuse, as demonstrated by this thread.

If you really want to just say OS (nothing wrong with that per se, as it just means operating system) it is helpful to say which type of operating system you are using

Android os 7 is no longer supported, so it is insecure.

Hope you will, over time, appreciate that you can do a huge number of tasks with your smartphone - not just mobile banking.

Well, as the OP says, it is still tolerated by NatWest (I've just checked myself) so NatWest obviously regard it as secure for now. Not that NatWest is, actually, the point as the thread is about Chase, but the OP did bring up NatWest too.

But as you say Android 7 is no longer supported - which means no longer supported by Google- a fundamental point worth stressing, as it's not just what banks trust what, it's about whether operating systems are actually being managed and patched anymore and Android 7 isn't, it's been left to fester.

I imagine NatWest's app will cease to work with Android 7 in due course.

Yes, the fact that Android 7 is still supported by some banks and not others doesn't in itself signify whether or not it can objectively be regarded as secure, it's just that the app upgrade paths will all be working to different timescales, i.e. it would be a major shock if every bank ceased support for a given iteration of an operating system at exactly the same time!

Chase, as a new entrant to the UK, will have made a conscious (and valid) decision not to build in backward compatibility with an operating system unsupported by its owner since 2020, because everyone using their app will have installed it within the past six months or so....
  • Thanks for the post Zanderman. That's what i say, I''m not into tech, I prefer reading books, and yes, I prefer reading a novel that's in paper form rather than downloaded to a Kindle.

This is worrying then as the Virgin Money app appears to run on Android 5.0, and Santander app on Android 6.1. I may have that wrong, but that's what i thought i saw when browsing.
