I'm an olio volunteer, currently have 1 slot at Tesco and 2 for KFC. The tesco collections are generally at 8.30pm or an early morning slot around 7am. The evening ones you'll have a mix of use by and best before items to list, so my listings normally go live around 9pm by the time I get back from the store and sort it out. The KFC ones vary as it depends on store closing times, one of mine is 8pm and the other 9pm. I don't necessarily give to the first requesters, but you are up against it time wise as use by items have to be collected the same night. I tend to list everything, go get myself a cuppa (or glass of wine!) then start looking through the requests. I also try to distribute fairly so one person doesn't get it all just because they happened to have requested first.
So keep an eye on the app around 9pm and first thing for food collected from Tesco.9 -
I live 10 miles from nearest shop so do a once a week shop. I'm not stockpiling as I don't have the money to invest in buying up a mountain of food but in the last year there have been so many shortages of basics (sunflower oil, bread flour, dried milk etc) that I tend to buy so I have one packet in use and a spare on the shelf.
I still have a chest freezer thats still going strong after 30 years so whenever there is a glut of fruit & veg from the garden, I prep and freeze (or make chutneys & jams) as much as I can rather than just giving it away.
When I see special offers on toiletries and cleaning basics like wash powder, soap, shampoo - I try to buy those although as I buy mainly unbranded, as often the special offers on big name brands still work out dearer than unbranded. That said, I try and build a stash of branded "treats" (branded shampoo, hand cream, shower gel etc) to make up toiletry hampers at Xmas to spread the cost over the yearNewly retired and looking forward to
a fulfilling, positive & happy future.9 -

One of my grandmas (born 1894) stocked up in sugar at the start of WWII. My mum was born 1939 and my auntie 1929 and remembered the stash of sugar lasting until after WWII.My grandad on that side had been in the army and out in India for a while and was a great fan of curry.Mum, having grown up through rationing, relied on seasoning and spices to perk up a meal so I always have a well stocked spice cupboard. I’ve inherited from her the need to have tinned tomatoes in the cupboard….. 😉✒️ Declutter 2025👗 Fashion on the Ration 2025 61/66 coupons (5 coupons silver boots)✒️Declutter 2024 🏅🏅🏅(DSis 🏅🏅)

Slinky said:I've been keeping my storecupboard topped up since prior to Brexit, with little reason to run it down since then. I'm in the fortunate position to be able to afford to do this, I'm very aware that a lot of people can't. I used to contribute to the food collection point at our local big Tesco, thinking that the food would be helping out our local foodbank, however I met the husband of the person who runs the local foodbank who said they aren't given anything by Tesco, it was all going to the Trussell Trust. Whilst I appreciate that it will be doing good somewhere, it wasn't going where I intended it to.I went on the website for the local foodbank who encourage people to contact them by email for bank details to make regular donations. Twice I've emailed them without response! Can't give it away. Will have to chase it up again.
The lady from the local foodbank phoned me back so I've set up a standing order and can now walk past the Tesco collection basket without feeling guilty.

We have the rest already in stock, and could last about a month.I have also picked up extra fruit teas (while visiting parents in the Netherlands), which they don't sell in Belgium. DD1 (13) has just started drinking tea and prefers the red fruity teas. It's a cheap warming drink. The one thing I will pick up from my pharmacy are the free iodine (?) tablets, 'just in case'.Vuja De - the feeling you'll be here later4

Nothing, It is very selfish and didn't work particularly well for most at the start of the pandemic.
