  • I feel you. I was paying 105 now I'm paying 223 and they say I'm underpaying and needing to have to pay 278. Had a fixed rate quote from eon a couple of days ago that was 500 odd quid.
I've turned my thermostats to 15 degrees and I've banned baths in my house now to try to get my usage down.

So - ARE you underpaying? What do your own annual consumption figures say you should be paying as a monthly average?

Just because a supplier projects how much energy you'll use, and charges accordingly, don't assume those projections are correct!

This is what shows on the smart meter anyways
If you've used that much in 12 months *without* the hot tub, your annual bill on April's capped variable tariff will be about £4200, that's £350/month.
If that was *with* the hot tub your electricity consumption will hopefully be half that, an annual bill of £3000, £250/month.
Note that this will rise again in October and no-one knows how much by; could be by 10%, could be 100% (hopefully closer to 10% than 100%!).

I have no idea if I'm underpaying. I cannot access my old people's energy bills anymore.
In the last 3 months I've used 6500 un it's of gas and 1500 units of electricity.
I've turned my thermostat down to 15 told the kids to have short showers so I'm keeping it at £228 but this is before the price rise, so God knows what I should be paying.

    Hi,
so, are these figures the actual meter readings, or annual usage or what period do they cover?

If you are on the current cap (rather than a fix), that usage would total £622.45, so £207.48 pcm (units and standing charges, ignoring the minor regional variations). On the new cap (from 01/04/22) that usage would cost £969.45 or £323.15 pcm. Obviously the three most recent months are winter months and you would expect the usage over the summer months to be lower.

It might also be worth looking at your energy consumption though, in three months you have used more than half of the average annual gas consumption and more than half of the annual electricity consumption, whilst you would expect some skewing to winter months it would indicate you are certainly a higher user so it might be worth looking at where you can economise and what changes you could make, potentially installing insulation etc.

We are on the Greener H1 tariff atm.. Our deal ends in MAY 2022.. We are currently getting quotes from £657 - £780 a month..
Your problem is that you are getting quotes. Don't bother as all the quotes are likely to be fixed rate deals at much higher prices than the capped variable rate tariff. The current situation has completely changed and switching is no longer viable, it's far better to stay on the variable rate with your current supplier as it's the cheapest option currently - totally opposite to everything we've done or been told in the past. Your supplier won't necessarily tell you the SVR is best and might try to direct you to a fixed rate for "certainty"
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Yep I know. Teenage boys and stuff. I am at home all day and am in rented so can't do a lot about insulation etc.

It's quite likely you are underpaying.

1500 KWh of electric is 6000 a year and that's twice the average'  Gas is not so easy to estimate but perhaps 15,000 KWh  But you've a young family so that's to be expected.

Involve your children in saving energy -  incentivise them

What does your least bill say ? Look at the bottom line - were you in credit or debit
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • I have same 3 bed bungalow log cabin hot tub set up, Shell are estimating £5200 for my annual bill, just in today.  They want my direct debit increased to More than I even earn in my part time job.  Whilst it might be a first world problem and I’ll be switching my hot tub off and anything else that’s using electricity, this crisis is way beyond hope for so many people.
