Standing charge for electricity sounds normal with 20.56p.

I would love there to be a search available that listed all the different energy companies standing charges. I spend a lot of time reading the tariff details when I look for a new supplier when all I want to know is the standing charge. I am a very, very low usage customer and the standing charge forms a high percentage of my bills. Please, no silly replies like "have it disconnected then".

That would not help you as the standing charges are more or less identical between the different suppliers, exception is Octopus who have a loyalty discount on their standing charge for existing customers of 50£ per year.vince65 said:I would love there to be a search available that listed all the different energy companies standing charges. Time of no standing charge or highly discounted standing charges are gone.1 -
Variable standing charges, why is it that one company offering various energy tariffs have different standing charges by tariff. Surprise surprise the cheaper the tariff the more expensive the standing charge? This makes no sense logistically unless the electricity on one tariff is more costly to deliver than another? I am no physicist but electricity is electricity and does not have unique properties dependant upon it's tariff. A cynic would surely draw the conclusion they find a way to penalise you whatever you do. Example. as at Feb '24
British Gas
Variable tariff Unit rate 28.42p per kWh Standing charge 58.68p per dayPrice Promise tariff Unit rate 24.58p per kWh Standing charge 67.65p per day0 -
This is where i think the MSE team should be focusing their "Standing Charges are wrong" effort - not that there should not be one, but that it should only reflect the cost of providing the supply to the consumer alone, and therefore fixed by region across all suppliers, and not vary by supplier/tariff. This would make it much easier for consumers to compare suppliers, as the market starts to open up again.Lymefossil said:Variable standing charges, why is it that one company offering various energy tariffs have different standing charges by tariff. As it is, the suppliers are going back to obfuscating the true cost of our energy by making tariffs more complex.0
