Nobody likes the standing charge increases but you'd have to be using a tiny amount of energy for actual use to not make up the majority of your bill.
    That's true.
For electricity, the average annual standing charge is £165.49. For your unit charges to be smaller than this you'd need to be using less than 584kWh/yr.
For gas, the average annual standing charge is £99.28. For your unit charges to be smaller than this you'd need to be using less than 1347kWh/yr.

True, but never forget that there isn't just one cap figure, always have to look at region and payment method and metering type to find the correct cap.

In addition to MWT's comment, remember that the cap is not a all you can eat amount, what is actually capped is the unit rates combined with the standing charge, over a fictionalised average user. The cap is not a cap on the monetary amount that they can charge you, which will be based on your actual usage.
  • matmatmatuk - Yes, I was only referring to the cap on the unit rates. Thank you for clarifying this point

Pointless trying to skimp on using gas , as even if I turn the gas pipe outside.
gas bills will be same as last year. on standing charges alone.  criminal.
If you really use that little amount of gas then you might be better off having it disconnected, then you get no standing charge.

The SVR standing charges increased by 9.4% and 73.6% for gas and electricity respectively, so unless you came off a very good fix and went onto a very bad one it is unlikely your standing charges increased by those percentages.

What deal were you on where you had a standing charge for gas of 11.11p?

Standing charge for electricity sounds normal with 20.56p.
  • I was on shell fixed rate march 22v6. Gas SC was .1114 is now .2722. Electric SC was .1196 now .3792 per day
