Ultrasonic said:Nobody likes the standing charge increases but you'd have to be using a tiny amount of energy for actual use to not make up the majority of your bill. That's true. For electricity, the average annual standing charge is £165.49. For your unit charges to be smaller than this you'd need to be using less than 584kWh/yr.
For gas, the average annual standing charge is £99.28. For your unit charges to be smaller than this you'd need to be using less than 1347kWh/yr.N. Hampshire, he/him. from ofgem website Suppliers can't charge you more than the cap we set and we monitor suppliers to make sure their default tariff rates comply.

True, but never forget that there isn't just one cap figure, always have to look at region and payment method and metering type to find the correct cap.thanksmartin said:from ofgem website Suppliers can't charge you more than the cap we set and we monitor suppliers to make sure their default tariff rates comply.

In addition to MWT's comment, remember that the cap is not a all you can eat amount, what is actually capped is the unit rates combined with the standing charge, over a fictionalised average user. The cap is not a cap on the monetary amount that they can charge you, which will be based on your actual usage.thanksmartin said:from ofgem website Suppliers can't charge you more than the cap we set and we monitor suppliers to make sure their default tariff rates comply.1 -
matmatmatuk - Yes, I was only referring to the cap on the unit rates. Thank you for clarifying this point0

If you really use that little amount of gas then you might be better off having it disconnected, then you get no standing charge.abzred said:My standing charge is doubled today. The SVR standing charges increased by 9.4% and 73.6% for gas and electricity respectively, so unless you came off a very good fix and went onto a very bad one it is unlikely your standing charges increased by those percentages.thanksmartin said:
