Didn't cut my old driver's licence in half before sending it back to DVLA

Just checked my wallet. Old one's still in there, cut in half as instructed, but not returned obviously.

  • Changed address three times in last 15 months with licence address changed each time. If I search around here I'll find all the old licences. Didn't return mine either.

I renewed my over 70 licence online last May and there was definitely no requirement to send the expiring licence back before receipt of the replacement. In fact I received it within a week.
I didn't send the old one back anyway. I'm sure it said, then, to return after receiving the new licence. Nothing has happened because of that. I would return it if they provided a prepaid envelope or Freepost address though.

    Green and Pink?
Have to ask why dont the policing require people to cut up their licence when sending in!

I saved 66p by not sending mine back. Checked online first and everyone agreed they aren't bothered.
  • I cut mine up and sent it back, but not before I received the new one. I don't think they care because otherwise they would send you a prepaid envelope.
  • If you have motorcycle entitlement don't send it back. It has been known for DVLA to leave your full bike info off and people have had to redo their test. I never send mine back.

Are you meaning when responding to a NIP to accept the points? (This is the only scenario I can think of where the Police require you to send them your licence card). You send them your licence card so they have proof they have the right person (to apply the points to) and then they return the same licence back to you. It would be pointless for either party to have a cut up licence card in this scenario. 🙄

Old thread I know but useful as I've just hit the critical [70 years minus 90 days] period for renewing my driving licence.   Today, the DVLA online application says "... confirm that I have cut my driving licence in two..." (past tense so should be done before application) and also says "... will return it to the DVLA (no timescale so on application you merely need to intend to return it in the future).    That might sound like nitpicking but it does mean that there is no period between application and receipt when no licence documentation would be held, which could lead to problems.   Shame the same principle does not apply to passports.

I rather like my paper licence, which surprisingly is still legal.   In fact, I still have my previous, red-cardboard-cover licence :)
