The Sun has published an article on this on their web site, which seems to be largely based on the contents of this thread, but they claim 2,500 First Direct customers have been affected (how they know this is not clear).

  • At least it's an alert to keep on top of, I have been keeping an eye on my account since I switched in a few days ago

What I don't understand is who is eating all this chicken? It sounds like hundreds of people have been hit over the last couple of weeks or so by fraudulent nandos orders. It can't be one very hungry person can it? Or is the nandos order processing system an easy way to brute-force the 1000 possible CVC numbers?

firstdirect did change over from visa to mastercard last year. Firstly, that makes the expiry date on a lot of cards easy to guess (probably 07/25 or 08/25). Maybe they're issuing them with sequential numbers and have made themselves an easy target?

Cards do not run in sequential no's.
Also many apps will not need the CVV.

Actually the change makes guessing expiry harder to guess. As there is a change of card supplier & normal expiry times go out of the window.
eg my old Santander visa card exp was 05-21 replacement mastercard was 05-25. Usual visa exp was 3 years.

Sure, but is it possible FD allocated random numbers in a guessable range. For example, I checked my colleague's card against mine. The first 9 digits are the same, and the last digit is a check digit. That still leaves a million different numbers.

FD have more than 1.5 million customers, so perhaps that whole block of numbers is utilised? With regards the expiry ... you'd only need access to one FD mastercard to know that the expiry is 49 months after start date.
  • Just had this happen to my NatWest Debit card.

Account is only used for the 2 DD's plus money shuffling reward, no paper statements, card never used and sat in a drawer.  Live alone so unless the dog did it no other occupants to do it.

The only difference between this thread and my situation, other than the bank, is it was £2.49 to iTunes.

i recently switched over from TSB to first direct ( switch date was  on 14/02/22) i used my card 3 times since Friday.
yesterday there was a transaction from nandos website on ny account for £23.18 , they also tried another for over £70 but due to insufficient funds it was declined.
i called first direct and they said they have recently had calls regarding other people in the same position. rhey told me it will get refunded .
its scary that its a brand new card and i have not set it up with anything apart from paypal.

has anybody had the same problem?
This has just happened to me, not Nando's but Foot Asylum this time. I was told that lots of people are reporting the same problem to First Direct. I was only alerted as my account went in to an unauthorised overdraft. I have never used the debit card before as I only have the account for the regular saver.

You have just written the exact post I came here to write, word for word (except I have ditched the RS a while ago and just kept the current account).

I had to wait over half an hour for a callback from them to report the fraud - perhaps they were busy dealing with other customers reporting the same thing.

Yes I was frustrated at having to also wait half an hour for a call back (around 7.30pm last night). I also could not freeze my debit card within the app as it said that there were no cards linked to my account - it was almost as if First Direct were aware of the issue and had stopped my card (but without informing me). As soon as I had finished speaking to First Direct I could see a replacement debit card in the app and was able to freeze this myself.

The next issue I have to deal with is to check whether going in to my unauthorised overdraft has been recorded on my credit file and make sure that this is removed by First Direct.

The lesson I have taken from this is to freeze the debit cards that I am not using with my other current accounts.
