i recently switched over from TSB to first direct ( switch date was  on 14/02/22) i used my card 3 times since Friday.
yesterday there was a transaction from nandos website on ny account for £23.18 , they also tried another for over £70 but due to insufficient funds it was declined.
i called first direct and they said they have recently had calls regarding other people in the same position. rhey told me it will get refunded .
its scary that its a brand new card and i have not set it up with anything apart from paypal.

has anybody had the same problem?

Interestingly I've just been contacted by First Direct with the same thing. Is this a First Direct / Nandos issue i wonder. Has anyone else had an issue like like from a different bank?

I don't think so - if you read the OP, it was the fraudulent transaction that was at Nando's, so Nando;s presumably weren't aware of the card details prior to that....

Odds on someone set up the Nando app using card details.

Fast Food is a common target from fraudsters. After all they do have to eat 🤣Good to see fraud system picking it up.

  • I've also just been contacted by First Direct's fraud team regarding several fraudulent Nandos transactions over the last few days which have been now been refunded.

Same here. First Direct account affected, debit card had £23 taken.
Reported to FD, card now cancelled and they say they are going to refund.
When I spoke to them they said they'd had lots of customers reporting similar issue.

I've only ever eaten at Nando's once about 3 years ago, and didn't set up any online account etc.
I'd really like to know how the scammers got hold of the card details....

  • Ive had exact same, ive never used my debit card, always use credit card, yet my details were used on nandos. Co. Uk. So this is 100% an inside job at first direct. And they also admitted to me it was happening to hundreds of accounts. And the fraud department really didnt seem to bothered at all.

You're not the first and won't be the last to assume an 'inside job' from card fraud, but it really isn't "100%" that at all, and is more likely to be closer to 0%!  Ask yourself this - if you were a bank worker with access to credit card data and the motivation and opportunity to commit fraud, why would you buy cheap fast food rather than something more worthwhile?

Search previous threads about fraud on rarely-used cards via Deliveroo for discussion about likely causes (brute force number guessing, etc)....
  • I received a text from FD asking about a Nando’s transaction, when talking to FD they said they had already approved 6 transactions - all to Nando’s - for a total of £114.

The card in question (Debit) has NEVER been used - for anything - it has never  left my house or been used online.

Question for FD is how did the fraudster get my details???

Also FD fraud team will call Me - in 4 weeks!!

Search "Brute Force" This has been covered before.
Once they get one valid card no they can work out other numbers.

It could just as well happened at card production facility.
Staff do not get access to more than one card at a time. So it would be very easy for tracking software to pick up a user that has been going into a account when they have no need too.
Odds on it being a staff member = 0% Unless they are really stupid.

Staff are not bothered as they are doing their job. You get your money back, bank gets it's money back = Nando's problem. Banks do not investigate these issues. If we did you would never get through to fraud teams.

Many moons ago we always used to get a lot of overseas ATM fraud. Fraudsters seemed to think banks did not work weekends 🤣In these cases we could pick out where it happened, just simply looking back on customers accounts & shouting out possible suspect retailers. You got to know the usual suspect types of retailers.
But when it's something like Nando's fraud, it odds on it's a hack at a retailer that often can be as far as years ago.
