I then said I add a pair of jogging bottoms or large jeans over the top. This was incorrect. I bought a cheap pair of XXXL jogging bottoms but it all became too bulky, so the ski trousers remained the outer layer.
It is very disappointing how little attention this thread has attracted given the energy prices last winter and sky high increases expected next winter. I read a prediction that 40% of people may suffer fuel poverty. So I would have hoped quite a lot of people may be interested in my ideas for saving thousands of pounds. But it's more like nearly everyone reading this thread has plenty of spare cash and doesn't mind spending it on heating.1 -
I have read this thread fully a few weeks ago.
I would suggest your way of living is the far extreme, most are looking to cut down not cut off but there are some useful little nuggets for cheap warm clothing.
For most a lower temperature across the house, getting to know their central heating and hot water system intimately will help.
In addition the heat the person not the home has been quite popular on the forum so a lot of this has been discussed over and over.
We are going to dial back a degree this winter mainly because we got a decent 2 year fixed deal and know our usage so know what we are comfortable spending. We decided to just go back to 20oC rather than 18oC and won't do that until the winter of 2024 depending on how much electricity costs then and other factors mentioned below.
We are lucky in that our energy costs represent less than 5% of our take home pay but this is about as much as we would like to spend on energy and from the winter of 2024 this will be our aim. Oh the days of Symbio and energy costs representing 1.5% of take home pay😥
Once the solar market calms down we will try and get some solar and batteries up and running for the winter of 2024.
I expect and hope for some big discounts for solar/battery backup to be announced by the government in the coming year and maybe even home wind turbine.grants and schemes.2 -
I don't see solar prices coming down in the next 3 years, More staff and old companies returning may help with number of installs and the waiting times, And again we will be competing with Europe for the output from china and shipping.0

from CNN: "health leaders on Friday issued the grim warning of a "humanitarian crisis" without action to stop energy prices increasing over the winter.Matthew Taylor, chief executive of the National Health Service Confederation, said in a statement that many "could face the awful choice between skipping meals to heat their homes and having to live in in cold, damp and very unpleasant conditions ... These outbreaks will strike just as the NHS is likely to experience the most difficult winter on record."
I disagree. I have lived without heating for many years, as you know. It's easy, achievable and perfectly comfortable. If I was the slightest bit cold, damp and unpleasant then I wouldn't do it. I reject all ideas that it's anything to do with ones genes. I get as cold as the next person if I don't wear enough clothes. I went camping in the north of England in July. I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt. After about 8pm, the temperature dropped a bit and it occurred to me that I was colder then than I ever get over winter.
Similar articles predict that around 10,000 people may die as a result of not heating their homes. I trust it will not include me or anyone who has bought garments recommended by me in this thread.7 -
I suspect it is considerably easier to do this in Herts as opposed to Northumberland or ScotlandLiving the dream in the Austrian Alps.4

Interesting thread, thanks op. I do agree with you that you can condition your body over time and that what may have once been uncomfortable ceases to be after a while. We heat our house to 15c nowadays over winter and it feels perfectly warm. Much more than 16c and it starts to feel too hot. Definitely couldn't stand 20+.1
