    Or even create a Linux boot "disk" (on USB) and boot from that. (This will let you run Linux from the USB drive rather than having to actually install it - although I guess the Windows installer process may do the same thing if it pre-loads drivers into memory during the start-up process).

    Correct - the windows installer process would load its own drivers.  As you say, you could do the same with a Linux USB.  Either would be a good option to determine if this is a driver or hardware issue.
