The matching serial number just means that is the meter you are being billed for. It doesn't mean it is the one supplying your flat.
Do the sanity test, you can see if the disc is turning, and how fast it is going. Turn everything off in your flat and it should be stationary.
You might need someone on the other end of a mobile phone call in your flat, if the meter is in a separate area from your flat!

Yes it is located 4 flights of stairs away so will try get someone over and help!
... and do try the 'turn everything on' test as well, and if the dial doesn't spin a lot faster then look for the meter with the fast spinning dial, or rapidly flashing light if the other meters are newer, and then turn everything off and see if that meter then stops spinning/flashing...

  • Hi,

And please do it soon... the suspense is actually killing me. (Seriously - if you overlook the money concerns here I am really intrigued to see how this one pans out!)
  • We had this problem many years ago. We turned everything off but the meter wheel kept turning. Finally realised that the communal facilities (lighting and shared washer and dryer) were on our meter!

There should be a meter per flat plus one that the landlord pays...

Sadly can not upload videos showing but did the tests, flat next to me went crazy fast when I had everything on, where as mine remained steady. Switched it all off and other flats did the same whilst mine was still moving. We may have found it!! Going to do a last try later tonight when I know there lights are off to be sure, but feeling some relief from it and an idiot for not taking notice of the others sooner!
That sounds like a good result for an evening's work :)

  • Was far to excited feeling like I had discovered the source so just went ahead and tried it again and same thing happened. Will try a 3rd time late just for safety but it does seem to be next doors! Does the fact theirs is new be the likely cause? (Mine is flat 8 theirs is 9)

"New" is quite a strong word to use for that meter, it might be newer than yours but it's still ancient. Digital meters were being fitted 20+ years ago. No, I suspect it's been wrong since the day the flats were built/electrified/converted (as applicable).
And someone (hopefully the building manager, not you) is going to have to explain to your neighbour that they've been paying the wrong electricity bill forever, too.

They'll get a shock if they have to pay for the extra 8418kWh !

😅 yes it just appears shinier then mine, the landlord has owned the whole building for many years so still odd no ones ever noticed it before, perhaps no ones ever been very frugal with the energy usage. Bit worry as next door recently changed tenants, but as you say definetly not my problem!

Thank you all so much for your help, hopefully won't be checking back in at 1am saying the last test has undermined it all.
