The main problem with buying an older model is battery life.  From member experience here, batteries last around 4-5 years.  Apple will replace them for a reasonable price, but it could wipe out any saving over buying something newer

    Cheers all again

I've noted on used phones people are saying 85/85% battery.

As others have warned me about the price, on further investigation I've noted to get a half-decent one I'd be spending about 230 pounds a lot more than I want to.

My needs are as per my OP

Did some more research on wif-fi connectivity and phone signal/reception. I'm getting more confused.

Is there an android phone that has good connectivity, reception, reliability and sub 150/170, please?

The main use is the odd phone call but do not want to miss calls due to poor signal. Good connections with my Ring, yale, Alexa, Google etc apps.

Like I said the iPhone 8 @£165 fits your requirements perfectly. You will probably have  at least 88% battery health which is decent enough.
I would not get a brand new android for your budget as you will be disappointed by its performance coming from an iPhone. A used android will likely not be sporting the latest OS.
     But this just my opinion!
My experience is positive. 6 months ago I paid £330 for an iPhone XS Max which had 88% battery health and in as new condition aesthetically. The battery is currently 87%.
Still on the latest OS and will be for years this was a £800 saving over the new price. It’s a no brainer.

Also to add to the above, the battery life on my 5 in the end was shocking, but it was still manageable because I just kept it plugged in while I was in the car for work, and carried a light powerbank the rest of the time.
    That’s a good price for an 8.

Friend of mine bough a second-hand iPhone a year ago with 85% battery. Twelve months later with fairly light use he had to replace the battery. Just saying.

    Thanks, appreciated,

No offence but I was advised by a friend that Iphones support apps longer.
The  "XS max" you refer to is it the 8?
    Cheers.
