I remember back in the 50s as a child wearing not only a vest but a liberty bodice too! How I hated those things. Both abandoned as soon as I could and never worn since - until now. The vests (or T-shirt under a jumper) that is, not the liberty bodice.halfamo said: I remember when almost everyone had vests to wear in the winter, what happened to that I wonder?
Grocery order delivered with all present and correct. There didn't seem to be a lot there for the money and I hadn't ordered any meat, poultry or fish either. The only freezer bits to put away were oven cakes, wholemeal muffins, hot cross buns and crumpets so it didn't take long to unpack. I bake my own bread (white and wholemeal) but like to have some morning goods by way of a change.
Still waiting for our energy supplier to contact us re payments from 1st Oct. Our fix is over the new price cap so I'm hoping there'll be an adjustment to the DD. That's my expectation anyway.
Ever the optimist! Be kind to others and to yourself too.8 -
halfamo - Mr F wears a vest all year. I wear a cami top when I layer up.
Been to prayers/lunch and Bible study at SA. Mr F has been out distributing leaflets for the table top sale on Saturday. Had a visit from Ddil and grandies.
Will be over our shopping budget for these 4 weeks of my pension money but lots of food in stock plus I did splurge on baking bits when I visited Home Bargain.Decluttering Achieved - 2023 - 10,364 Decluttering - 2024 - 8,365 August - 0/45

Liberty bodices always cause a giggle in our family, I'm young enough to have avoided them however my elder sisters weren't so lucky. As repeated at my mum's funeral service! my eldest sister at 11 hid hers under the mattress and it was found by my mum who took it up to the small village school. My sister was called up by the teacher in class and informed loudly that her mother was here with her liberty bodice 😁 my sister is over 80 and is still teased over itYorksLass said:

I also remember a great aunt at 90+ lecturing my mum who was in her 70s for leaving her vest off in a heatwave as it was only May so she should still have her winter vest on, summer vest were worn from June but never no vest 😁Having stopped wearing vest when I started wearing bras both my aunt and mum would approve of my vest collection once I turned 50 although not for the summerLife shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage - Anais Nin10 -

My late ma-in-law used to say that and it wasn't the month of May, but the May blossomPollycat said:

my children used to say Nanny was the 'old wife all the tales were written about'. But as a born and bred country woman she knew a good few cures for all sorts of things.
Which was just as well as my late OH never saw a Dr until he joined the RAF in 1951.His Mother seemed to know all sorts of cures for most ailments, mostly learned from his Grandma (her Mum) who was the local lady in the village who helped bring folk into the world, and 'laid' them out when they left. So Granny beatrice had all different recipes for things to cure most ailments. Apparenly it was ten shilling to asist at birthing and 7/6 to 'lay' them out when they had passed. My ma-in-law said it was because the dead were a lot less trouble
My late OH swore by cellular vest in winter when he was working outside, but I soon broke him of that habit

My mum used to knit my vests and as a late developer was still wearing them age 14years . All the other girls at my school had fancy bought ones. How I hated those vests and was so glad when I could start wearing bras.

I remember my mum would give my brother and I cereal with warm/hot milk in the winter before school. I don't like porridge so hot milk on cornflakes it was. She also used to put socks up our arms as well as on our feet so we didn't get cold in bed.YorksLass said:

When I was 13, I stayed overnight at my paternal aunt's house. She was "shocked and horrified" to discover that I wasn't wearing a vest over my bra.
Next morning, she bought me 2 lightweight vests and told me to imagine how ashamed I'd feel if I had an accident and the doctors at the hospital would see that I was almost naked.
When told my parents, my father said to my mother, "Well, now we know why she's childless."

My mother used to put hot milk on cornflakes in the winter. I hated it as they went soggy.
There was a girl in my class at school who had to wear her elder brother's cast off vests-the plain white ones.7 -
Once I was old enough to know what "liberty" meant I always thought that liberty bodices were completely misnamed. They were like armour. I hated them. However we lived in a 3 bedroom house with one fire and I don't remember being cold so maybe they did their job!9
