and his boss said because the holiday diary runs Jan - Dec, he couldnt put it in then, but dont worry there wont be a problem, wait until Jan and then he could put it in the diary then.
I know this doesn't help, but how does anyone reliably book holiday in January on that system? "Hi boss, I'd like to take a week's leave in the New Year, straight after Christmas, would that be OK?" "Sorry, jack, can't put it in the holiday diary before January, you'll have to come in on the first day so that I can do that."
The holiday isn't until the 25th Feb, he tried to put it in the diary in Nov last year but was told to wait until the new holiday diary comes out as it runs Jan - Dec, Spoke to his boss again this month and thats when he was told "sorry but I cant let you have the time off". After he had already been told he could when he first started in Sept last year, the holiday has been booked since 2019.

I'm quoting SS's post because the OP hasn't been able to answer it.
It wasn't about the OP's son wanting a holiday in February and being fobbed off in November but how the company could possibly not allow someone to book a new year holiday until the year began.

Assuming the OPs second hand information is all correct,  it is certainly a good question. But it doesn't change the facts of the current situation. It's the sort of question one might ask once one had two years service rather than less than six months.  Even if the leave had previously been agreed,  if the needs of the employer demanded it, they could still have cancelled it. I'm hoping that the OP might update on the progress of discussions her son had to try to get cover.  It may not seem "right", "fair" or whatever else to any of us.  I agree that it is "pants" and really horrible.  But repeating how long it's been booked for isn't getting us any further forward. If there is some progress on the employers suggestions then we may be able to make further suggestions to help.

I understand your comment, but how could my son ask the question about booking the holiday when he wasn't working there. The holiday was originally booked in Nov 2019. The needs of the employer have only come to light when my son has approached his boss for the 3rd time (like he was told do so) this month. It is at this point that his boss has then turned round and said "im sorry but I cant let you have the time off". My son told his boss prior to accepting the position that he had this holiday booked, his boss said "not a problem, we can honour that as you have had it booked before working here". My son has spoke to the other member of staff about covering for him, and this person has said they will think about it. On the 19th of this month, my son was in a meeting with his boss's boss, to discuss this time off. He was told that they would have to approach HR to see what can be done. The company doesn't have its own HR department so it will be a 3rd party HR. My son asked for an update yesterday, as he hadn't heard anything, and they are still waiting for a response from HR.
