I think the secret here is to not let them know how much you have.  If you tell them you have £400 they are going to think you have at least £600.  They are going to want that.  So play the cards close to the chest.

Agreed, I offered them 25% and didn't mention anything about how much money I have to offer them if that makes sense? I only plan on offering % instead of ££

Yes - my understanding is that offering percentages, and starting far lower than you expect they might accept is the way forwards. Some will refuse outright, some will counter offer with something silly in the other direction (75% for example, meaning you'd likely meet in the middle at 50%), some will make a counter offer which although higher, you can actually live with, and a very, VERY few will say "Oh alright then, go on!" and then you're properly quids in. Fingers crossed all your smaller ones fall into that final group - well we can hope, no?!

  • Morning all,

So I've been thinking once this debt is paid and hopefully I still work with Sainsburys, I want to get myself a new car. Both my past cars have been Audi TT MK1 and they've post cost me more than they are worth. Which currently doesn't help when you're in debt. So I want to  start a budget to get finance IF I can due to my credit score (this isn't for a while yet so just brainstorming) I'm hoping my credit score will become better, no I'm not hoping it will just jump over night once my last debt payment is paid.

Anyone with car finance suggest some tips? Again this is just an idea but I do need a newer car
    Hi Jade,

I can support with this (if you're happy to take it offline via PM on here when you're ready).
If you believe you can, you will. If you believe you can't, you won't.

    Secured/Unsecured loans x 1
    Credit Cards x 8 (total limit £55,050)
Creation FS Retail Account x 1
    Creation Credit Sale 0% x 1 = £112.50pm x 20 mths
    0% Overdraft x 1 (£0 / £250)
    Mortgage Outstanding - £137,707.00 (Payment 13/360)
    Total Debt = £7,400 (0%APR) @ £100pm - Stoozing

  • Best tip I can offer you on car finance would be to get something a little less "snazzy" than an Audi TT - that'll reduce your insurance costs too!
insurance isn't too bad actually, it's around £55
Is that £55 for the year?  Surely not unless that is third party, fire and theft? Prices of used cars are through the roof at the moment.  My DH is looking to change his but our local dealer who normally sources our cars says they are all very expensive.  Audis are more expensive than most not only to buy but also maintain.
    I wish, its £55 a month
Once you are sorted car insurance is much cheaper if you pay annually.  £55 a month is £660 a year which is expensive for car insurance but part of that is because an Audi is probably expensive to insure.

Agreed, I never pay for car insurance monthly, it works out at something ridiculous like 39.9% APR!!

Month insurance is the last resort.  I wouldn't be surprised if your quotes are lower if they know its going to be paid upfront.  They do like the money in their grubby little hands!

Thanks all, this is my aim. I want to pay my car insurance and car tax yearly instead of monthly

  • I'm going to disagree that your insurance is particularly expensive to be honest - I have no idea how old you are but I'm guessing you're a good many years younger than my "forty-mumble" years. I'd also guess looking at the fall in instalment cost you mentioned from last year to the renewal price that you may well still be earning no-claims discount. Yes - as I suggested previously paying annually and then budgeting internally for the monthly amounts  is without question cheaper, but allowing that I pay best part of £300 a year to insure my '16 plate Clio I don't think you're doing too badly! (And it WILL get cheaper of course!)

Paying annually should be everyone's aim - but it's not always reachable for folk as you do need to be able to accumulate that amount upfront whilst still paying monthly initially, of course. It probably IS within your reach though, so definitely one to go for sooner rather than later!
