No smell or taste.Frugalistamama said:Thanks for those ideas. Any idea if you can taste or smell the sour milk in the bead or scones?
The plain one goes brilliant with soup.
I use buttermilk in my scones and they are very light. A definite difference to ordinary milk, I would presume sour milk would do the same.
I haven't got a photo of mine, but they look similar to the ones below.
Soda farls : just half the soda bread recipe, form a flat round, cut into quarters and a slow griddle in a non stick pan. 8 mins approx each side. Split open and butter. Reheat in the toaster.

Thanks for posting the sour milk ideas. Sour milk is a problem in our house as often milk is bought from a local shop that I have a hunch must leave outside whilst unloading near a heat vent as it turns quickly. Milk from milkman better but if a lot of people are in/out have to shop locally.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

Last can of green lentils used in curried green soup. Also have a very large bag of green lentils and the soup was so delicious I'm thinking I will bulk make some soup in the week or next weekend for the freezer.
There is a lot of "left over" stuff in the fridge so dinner will be just that. Pickings from the fridge. Which makes me feel both economical and organised

Would you be able to share the curried lentil recipe please?
DH thinks we are going to finish the chickpea tikka tonight but I've seen what a lot there is and am thinking of modifying it with some boiled potato and frozen spinach so I may have to find freezer space for some of it.
We are chipping away at freezer and fridge contents but haven't actually used a lot up.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

The tikka is all finished and I've got more cheese out of the freezer, and somehow there's more fridge space. I've also soaked and am cooking the last of a beautiful batch of mixed beans that I bought thanks to my kind neighbour sharing a delivery during lockdown. I've not decided what to do with them: some might go into a sausage and bean sort of casserole but lots will go in the freezer.
I've used a few other bits and pieces but they are ones to replace so they don't count!I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

I have checked through all of the stored apples. Only three bad ones, and a couple set aside to use today. Microwave sponge pudding, stewed apple and custard.
I bought more mouse traps for the garage.
Finished the 2 bags of pears from our neighbours.
We have a glut of eggs from the hens. I hard boiled 6 for sandwiches and snacks.
Finished the last half of a large marrow from the fridge in a blitzed soup with red lentils, onion, celery, sweet potato, and tomato purée, and stock powder.6 -
@Nelliegrace, I remember my parents storing surplus eggs in waterglass. It seemed to work well as we had a dozen hens who would go off-lay in winter so it helped tide us over and I never remember any going off.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

@Cherryfudge my curried green lentil soup is based on this
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/curried-carrot-lentil-soup
and then adapted with whatever I have in so I rarely have leeks but often have celery and or onions and if there is a bit of broccoli or something left over I add that, but, I always add the carrots (chopped) and the lentils
I blitz it with a stick blender till smooth. Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

I freeze a couple of dozen eggs individually for winter most years, @Cherryfudge, but one of the older hens kept laying a few eggs last year, and another restarted laying in early February. I can sell a few boxes of eggs to friends and the money goes into the chicken feed fund. They have good quality layers pellets and wild bird seed for their scatter corn.
Our egg supply reminds me of the story of the magic porridge pot as the egg trays are refilled daily. We used to keep colourful egg layers!
