Hi @wumph, I love your user name! You can keep track of a thread by subscribing: go to near the top of the page and on the right hand side there's a little bookmark symbol to click on. It looks like a rectangle with a triangle taken out of the base. Once you click it, it will change colour to show you are subscribed (click again to unsubscribe). You can then use the 'quick links' on the blue bar at the top of the page to get the drop-down menu which includes bookmarks. If you click on that, it will show a list of all your subscribed threads.
Sorry if you are already aware! I would hate not to know what happens with your sausage and bean casserole, it sounds nice, and the sort of thing I make.
Good for you being experimental! I've never tried ostrich and am tending more towards vegetarian now but I think the most unusual thing I've had was crocodile (and yes, it tasted like chicken).
Today we had a very large piece of chicken between us in a Madhur Jaffrey curry that we'd not tried before. (Mughlai Chicken). It was really tasty but I made the whole quantity for 6, then used half the sauce, so I have another curry to make with the rest. Oh, and I found I still have most of a carton of soy milk in the fridge and the whey from the ricotta. This should be a cookery week so I don't waste them, but it's filling up with other things already.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

I've finished the pate and had half the ricotta, which is okay now it has enough salt and has maybe matured a bit. Does ricotta mature? I have no idea.
We are both home for dinner tomorrow so I'll give some thought about what to have with the rest of the curry sauce. I'm pleased to say DH seems to be fine with it despite there being quite a lot of yogurt. There was supposed to be half a pint of cream but he can't have that so I just left that out and it was still good. It seems yogurt is lower in lactose than some other milk products.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

The curry was supplemented with some chicken from the freezer and has been eaten. Tonight I used frozen sausages and store cupboard things to make sausage pasta and two portions have gone in the freezer.
Our local L1dl has £1.50 veg boxes so I bought one and got the following:
Savoy cabbage (a bit yellow on some outer leaves)
bag of ready-cut iceberg (not so easy to use up)
6 apples (not ripe so I've sat them in the sun in case it has an effect)
net of 9 satsumas - some already eaten this evening
4 red chillies - will be chopped and frozen
1 Conference pear
bag of coriander
bag of basil
3 onions - to add to the big bag of them I already have.
For a box of sold-off-cheaply produce, it was in really good condition. The herbs were getting towards the end of usability so I've put them in water and will make carrot and coriander soup. I think the basil might need to turn into pesto as it's the second bunch this week and had lots of loose leaves.
The fruit will be eaten soon enough: DH gets through lots. Any ideas for the lettuce and cabbage?I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

Thank you @Pollie and @leftatthetrafficlights! Pollie, I'm going to add Caesar salad to your list... it's been at the back of my mind that I like the dressing that goes on it, so I might just get some - but I seem to remember I liked the braised lettuce too.
Leftatthetrafficlights, I must try that recipe! Do you think I need the proper rice, or will whatever's in the cupboard do? I have the rest in store (sorry to be a rice ignoramus).
Today DH finished up some fishcakes and I finished the ricotta with some oatcakes. That ricotta got better as it aged! DH got some groceries but I managed to resist buying anything as I really didn't need it.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

@Cherryfudge - I've done it with all types of rice very successfully so I wouldn't buy anything in 😉 the only thing I would say is that if you're using basmati rice you'll need to reduce the cooking time slightly and if it's brown rice you may need to increase the cooking time a bit. If it seems like there's too much fluid (it did once for me when I used basmati) just uncover it earlier to let it reduce 😁DNF: £708.92/£1000

) so I spread it out on a plate to cool and the rest is now in the fridge for tomorrow.
The L1dl box is now reduced as follows:
Savoy cabbage (a bit yellow on some outer leaves) - half left
bag of ready-cut iceberg (not so easy to use up) - amazingly, I've not yet had an opportunity to do anything with this
6 apples - DH, the apple eater, says they are very sweet and they are disappearing fast.
net of 9 satsumas - a few left
5 red chillies - chopped and frozen
1 Conference pear - not eaten yet
bag of coriander - was supposed to be going into carrot and coriander soup but I've not had time and energy
bag of basil - some went into tuna pasta
3 onions - to add to the big bag of them I already have - added to the rest.
We also roasted a chicken today and there's enough left for a curry and probably one of two other things.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

I confess to throwing out one of the bunches of basil, the bag of chopped lettuce, the (now yellow) coriander and two satsumas, as all were inedible.
However I've finished up the rice with some cheese - an odd mixture but quite enjoyable. Some of the bunch of basil from the previous week has now got roots so I've planted it, along with a side shoot off a gifted tomato plant and an accidentally broken fragment of a gooseberry bush that's now got a great set of roots. So you win some, you lose some.
There is a little space in the freezer. It won't last.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
