I'm afraid I've filled the spaces in the freezer again, but they were such good bargains! Lamb at 60% off, 6 pieces of salmon and 4 breaded fish all at 30% off... and tomorrow I'm hosting a couple if friends and we're having pizza and salad, so the fridge will be full again.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. A bit of a crazy day here: I went out to get food for my friends tonight (we take it in turns to host) and decided on sweet potato wedges, but thought they were a bit expensive so I'd try a cheaper shop. I then decided to make some using a fresh sweet potato, so bought that along with the rest of my shopping. When I got home, I texted to confirm our arrangements and had a hurried text back from one of my friends to say we'd agreed not to meet as she has something else happening. I'd completely forgotten, so I had couple of bags of shopping and no one to feed. DH had already had his dinner, so as to be out of the way when my friends came round. I filled up most of the freezer yesterday so I couldn't pop much in there.
We've been able to pass the pizzas and surplus salad to nearby family members, and the sweet potato fries went in the freezer. Yes, I absent-mindedly bought not only a fresh sweet potato, but the fries as well.
DH is still laughing.
I think in some ways I've benefitted, as I have coleslaw, hummus, and some other salady things that I wouldn't have bought for just me, and it's nice to be able to give something away. I also get to finish off some chickpea tikka that needed to be eaten and which is currently a bit of a favourite of mine.

I've made this today, to use up mushrooms, carrots etc. I also made a batch of carrot and swede mash which I've now frozen. I was so pleased to be able to use up a lot of vegetables which had been rather haunting me - we even finished an oddment of cauliflower with dinner - and the fridge is looking much more orderly, though it's also got lots of marmalade in as I made a new batch.
The reason for all this industry is that we're going to be away for a few days and I decided all the lurking things were going to be past it if left. I've crammed the hummus into the freezer, but there are still coleslaw and cream cheese looking for a home.
I've also made yogurt and there was enough milk left over for hot chocolate tonight, but none going to waste. That's amazing - how often do things happen to be just the right amount?I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

Well I haven't been much on the using-up train for a while, a combination of GI issues limiting what I could eat, and getting bogged down after the easy wins of the freezer.
However spouse is clearly full of spring and went headfirst into the stockpile cupboard this morning. It's not as bad as we thought, there's about a million different carbs but spouse has come up with a decent plan to use them up. Let's see how it goes over the next few weeks!
First plan is some tired pasta into tuna pasta tonight.4 -
I've been away for a while but need to get back on this as the holes I made in the freezer and cupboards are full again. I'm going to focus on one thing from the freezer, fridge and store cupboard to use up before I move on to the next thing.
First up: fridge - sweet potatoes that have been there far too long. Freezer - Brussel sprouts. Cupboard - ramen noodles
Thinking of sweet potato fries, ramen soup and Brussels with the Sunday roast. Hopefully I'll use up other things along the way.Grocery challenge:

We had our few days away and between discovering the joys of Home Bargains, and trying to make the most of some discounts nearer to home, stores are very full. A nice problem to have.
This week I had to throw out a bit of cream cheese and the last of the coleslaw, but we tried a new recipe which made a portion of leftovers and, coupled with leftovers from before we were away, we've eaten well. Today we had fish from the freezer but a new packet of peas and some kidneys have gone in.
In stores, there's a serious amount of hot chocolate - who knew you can get a giant tub for what they now charge for an ordinarily large one? I've also been prevaricating over whether to let the big river company ship me a catering tub of cappuccino but I've put that one on hold and am frantically buying up the same thing in sachets as it's on offer in a couple of places. I did the sums and cup for cup there was about 1p difference in price between catering sized and sachets, (27.5p vs 26.5p I think), but it's 20.6p on offer, and I drink at least 2 a day. £150.38 less a year at the offer price? Can't be!
I also spent out on 'posh' coffee for treats and friends coming round, and some more for a gift because I had a Clubcard promotion for them.
I've finally got my Nectar app working - had been using the card - but misread some offers for which it turns out I should have had a separate app. My phone is so full that I'm not sure I can fit another one on, but it would have been a pound or so's savings on things I buy often. Ah well. I did manage to get 50p off something, so that's a bonus.
So all in all, in addition to eating out a bit, I've overspent on the store cupboard, though not too much on daily eating. I hope that will even out over the next few weeks and months, though we have guests next weekend so there will be some more spending there.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. I only managed to use up some of the noodles.from my list of things to use. I didn't get round to the others. I seemed to have a lot of cooked food in the fridge, so used up a bit of leftover Dahl and some rice for my lunch, after school snacks for kids were soup and last bit of crusty bread for one and the last of last nights stirfry for the other. Dinner was a lonely vegi burger for me and two chicken legs, shared between three, the last of the rice, fresh salad and some leftover broccoli. There are a lot less tubs in the fridge than this morning!
Now I need to go and cook up those sweet potatoes for tomorrow to go with a roast chicken I have in the fridge, I will also put the Brussel sprouts with it. Then pick my next 3 thinks to use.

I made tabbouleh this morning with some very old bulgar wheat. One more iteration will finish the bag (which we won't replace).
Spouse finished up some wheat noodles last night so next target is the weird noodles (buckwheat maybe? decanted into a Tupperware so who knows).2 -

We have had a chickpea tikka from the freezer and I turned some Y/S rhubarb into muffins, discovering as I did so that pecan nuts are really worth trying on a rhubarb and ginger muffin. I think it's the texture. I might have to find some more rhubarb now to use up the pecans... the baking also finished the plain flour and a box of eggs but I need more flour now.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living.
