I've popped notes through doors too, never come to anything but I do think worth trying, and if when you look round you hate it you can always say having looked round you do like it but sadly the time is not right because of 'family commitments' which is suitably vague!Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!3 -
Daisy I remember many years ago we were up for sale here for a while, it was shocking how rude some people were 😳 “this old bathroom needs replacing’ it was about three years old and I was stood right there 😡 plus the “it’s on a main road” brigade - yes! as per the street view on rightmove- plus don’t most of us do a drive past first if possible? Then there’s the “our current house is way bigger than this and in so and so crescent”, she stuck in my mind. Bit like my newer next door neighbour, if she told me once shes told me a thousand times her old house was huge and detached 🤣 if she catches me she likes to talk about how many holidays her daughter goes on and once even gave me a long story about daughters house purchase years ago and the sellers bought a very huge house and spent a fortune doing it up- turned out it was best friends house, not sure she liked that 🤣 I was even asked what road my parents live in and informed it’s quite expensive there. She’s the reason I grew the weeds on our drive up to waist height, petty but I can’t stand snobs 😁

One of the reasons we left the South East and moved North was the fact we were priced out of where we wanted to live without taking on more mortgage. Moving North meant over twice the sq footage and mortgage free. Much better quality of life too and get to see the kids when we go stay/they come visit, feels like proper time with them rather than dashed pop in’s.4

Ugh I hear ya! Somebody marked us down on 'location' when were letting out our self contained part on booking dot com. Eh, what? YOU chose US! We didn't make you come here 😆 surely you checked us out on maps and streetview? Jeezo, folk!! Drive you mad.

If I wouldn’t get homesick I really would do this and it would be to York 😬 I am sure ds1 will no doubt live in Leeds eventually and I’m sure I will see more of him there than I do here 🤣 I’m glad it’s worked out for you.Jellytotts said:One of the reasons we left the South East and moved North was the fact we were priced out of where we wanted to live without taking on more mortgage. Sc, I LOVE Hyacinth Bouquet 🤣, first cruise with my parents I set up a WhatsApp group with her photo on it as I loved the cruise episode 😆MFW 67 - Finally mortgage free! 💙😁4 -
We had this too - someone who viewed and then said it was too close to the school (which they worked at) - if you know where it is in relation to the school, then why waste our time looking! Agree that it’s incredibly frustrating when you’ve all the stress of preparing for viewings going on!daisy_1571 said:Ugh I hear ya! Right, well I’ve been stressing and avoiding working out what we need to pay for in the next year (and a bit) finally I’ve worked and reworked it out as much as can be done.Income will be steady for dhs wages, however income /expenditure for the factory is unknown 😩 currently a wage of £1k pm is being paid out but hopefully dh will continue that until March from the buffer he has. Come the end of Feb our costs will go up from fairly minimal (under £200) to more like just under £1k per month - the end of business rate relief after 6 months standing empty. He also has a cushion for a few months after that. If we get to the point it’s still not rented and running out of money I will use money from the mortgage offset 😒 as we are in a fixed deal (offset to zero earlier this year) we haven’t moved the balance to repayment fully and can’t redeem the mortgage with out redemption penalties before sept 2027.We will reduce the rent asked on the factory again, dh said new year but I May email today if he’s agreeable so it’s all done before Xmas as I think people have time at home and it might help? We set the rent too high in their suggestion (two specialist commercial agents although you wouldn’t know it!) and have already reduced once. Apparently timing is more important than price 🤷♀️
Anyhoo……
I’m basing our income on no rent coming in and dh paying out £1k pm until March and not allowing for money having to go in at this point. (I seriously think we should be considering selling if it goes this far but dh is dead against it).
So we have a raft of cruises booked, the dearest of these being booked a month after I had open heart surgery when I thought it was good idea to book and pay for all the kids and their partners 🤣 plus I’ve booked and paid for already a cheaper one week one for April next year for just us plus an Arctic one in November with my parents. So due to the timeframes it’s a lot, everything we have plus a bit more and that’s without talking the 0% ccs 😳
So total left for the kids cruise left to pay : £13,008.98😱
Total left for the Arctic one: £3,570
Total left for April one: £782.93
Balance payable for April 2027 one that’s due Jan 2027 : £2158
PLUS we have two booked for the year after (the April 2027 being one of them) and one the year after that 😆to be honest I’m happy with those as we got some cracking early deals as we managed to be onboard and booked on release date for some which is way cheaper. We have a week in 2028 (I know 🤣) for £529 each to Scandinavia £75.57 a night for travel and full board 😬
So things are very tight and I feel guilty as it’s very much self inflicted 🙄 we have decided to plough on and prioritise these over everything else for the next year and a bit. I don’t want to cancel the kids one as it’s something we have never done before, they only went away once abroad with us when they were tiny and that wasn’t great 🤣 so it’s a bucket list item I guess you could say! Once the factory is rented out I think we will put at least half of the extra income into our pensions as that’s currently on pause since sept when dh went self employed - just reading that back makes me feel stupid 😩
On the plus side……
We are and hopefully will stay MF
We have a factory to rent with no mortgageDh has a job
We can be frugal when needed - sure doesn’t look like it today 😆
The amounts listed may well end up being less as so far we haven’t asked DGD as she was going to be at uni when we booked but maybe now she won’t be, so this is the max it would cost with her and her partner to go with us (my aunt has a cabin booked at a great early price like us but has changed her mind so I can take over her booking) the same trip is way more expensive now.So monthly payments on top of bills are basically £1644.30 pm until March and then £641.30 afterwards. Oh and I’ve also chucked into the pot of expenses £280 for a private heart scan for ds1 who still hasn’t had his done from last year but agreed to after Xmas finally.I’ve upped the gas / elec pot for £150pm to £200 and we have £125 pm each personal spending money, £350 for groceries and everything else, in actual fact I may as well post all that too, in for a penny!£1.15 mobile
£11.45 NHS prescription certificate£19.99 Cinema pass
£193 council tax
£15 tv licence
£22.13 life ins
£48 water - on a meter now 🙂
£200 gas/elec
£350 groceries pets home etc.
£200 Xmas birthdays
£125 personal spends
£125 personal spends
£100 car and home ins , tax, mot
£50 private cardiology and scan every 18m
£49.99 sky and n@tflix - in contract will reduce a bit
£17.99 broadband
£30 vet pot
£40 dentist -it’s nhs but have to also have hygienist every three months due to heart 😒
£200 self funding sick pay / holiday pay pot as dh self employed
£120 cc min payments 0%
£0 balance remaining after pay minus expenses….
oh and I forgot to mention total debts it’s to make it worse £3339.55 0% until Nov 2026 plus £8454.66 0% until March 2027 , obviously I will be having to re finance these.Oh to update the £1000 Oct- December challenge, this took a while to comb through last night as I was a bit behind with updating and I’m at £951.52/£1000 today 🥳 this is a surprise as I felt I’d overspent but I guess it was because my spending has been for Xmas presents from the Xmas pot, so some success even though it’s minor 🤣MFW 67 - Finally mortgage free! 💙😁5
