Pointless tasks on an everyday basis for me is ..putting on makeup daily or brushing my hair & going to the hairdressers .

I'm at home most of the time so wearing makeup is pointless and also when I do go out somewhere nice I get a bit of a happy smile from family as it's not something they see often ..more of an impact when I do wear it .

My hair is dead straight & dark so won't hold any style for long so it gets cut every 2 years , so it goes from bob to long and doesn't get that messy daily .I'm 57 and have very few grey hairs and they don't bother me, so occasionally I will put a colour on for something special but no one notices that at all ...so again a bit pointless

    Pointless tasks....

    Sending Christmas cards.

Ironing (I've used one once in 18 months.

Using a fresh cup when you make tea and your previous cup has been empty for less than a couple of hours.

Polishing in my house (it's settles again a day later).

Shopping for events like valentine's and being over charged for it in the process.

As this has some how turned into a washing thread.... I used to hate separating coloured for washing, so I just started buying dark/black clothes...

  • One thing I've stopped doing (as I've just learnt it wasn't doing what I thought it was doing) is Shake+Vac before hoovering. I always thought the powder attracted the dust/muck up out of my carpets, so as I was hoovering I getting it cleaner than just plain hoovering. Nope - it's purely a fragrance thing, apparently!

Every day's a school day, it really is.
Shout out to people who don't know what the opposite of in is.

    Example:

    I only wear black socks.
A few months back someone said they don't bother to pair their socks up - just shove them in the washing basket, wash/dry them and put them in the drawer as single socks not "linking" them as a pair at any time.
Since this, it has made me wonder how many other somewhat pointless things we do purely because it's habitual.

I have seen some pretty successful youtubers that only wear black clothes. The idea being that they don't have to make color choices and any garment will go with another. One less thing to think about in the morning when rummaging in the wardrobe.

That's a good point about socks. Its a mystery how a pair can go in the washer but then one goes missing rendering the other useless.

I was working from my parents' house just before Christmas. Everytime my mother made tea she'd bring a cup into me. At one point she was like "how do you manage at home without me clearing out all your cups for you". I don't use a new cup everytime I make tea!

I have a trick for this which we've been doing for years and it really works. When you take your socks off, roll them back into a ball when you chuck them in the hamper. Then you will always pick up a pair when getting a wash load ready. Just pull them back apart as you put them into the machine. Pairing them up when dry takes a split second as their partner will always be close by! And you will never end up with a drawer full of redundant singles, like we used to have!

I rarely iron, as others have said you can really reduce creasing by hanging clothes neatly to dry. I remember my poor mum ironing for hours every Sunday afternoon when we were kids  :/ I experimented with not separating washing during lockdown. Nothing bad happened so washing is more efficient now, it's quicker to get a full load, and lights (that we don't have as many of) don't linger in the hamper for ages waiting for enough to fill a load.

I hardly send any Christmas cards or postcards any more, except for ones to my OH's nan who is in her 90s and loves getting post. It's is such a small thing to do and makes her so happy.

No ... we don't lose many socks now there are just the two of us, I check I haven't dropped any on my way to the machine, and mine are quite distinctive ...
