Stopping Doing Pointless Traditional Things

Example:
I only wear black socks.
A few months back someone said they don't bother to pair their socks up - just shove them in the washing basket, wash/dry them and put them in the drawer as single socks not "linking" them as a pair at any time.
Since this, it has made me wonder how many other somewhat pointless things we do purely because it's habitual.
Another good example (again on the washing theme) is seperating colours.
Some households can probably generate enough to do that but elsewhere on the internet I read that someone just shoves everything in together, whites, blacks, all as they wash everything at 30°C anyway so colours generally don't run at that temperature.
Is it worth splitting washing into colours or agian, is it just a habitual thing that we dont' particularly need to do these days?
Can anyone think of any more?

Ironing... Unless it is a uniform, smart work clothes etc, nothing actually needs ironing.
It's a throwback from women having to beat & mangle washing, it should have died with the invention of washing machines but women kept on ironing and raising (mainly) daughters who carry it on and on...
We have an iron at home that's been used maybe twice in over a decade... When I move out I'm certainly not buying one.
I wash all colours together and have zero issues. Admittedly I have few whites but plenty of lights.8 -
I split washing into dark/colours and whites.
I iron maybe three things I own. Which means I wear them a lot less than I would if they didn't need ironing.Debt free Feb 2021 🎉2 -
My mother doesn't separate her washing, they don't generate enough for individual loads.
However, she does iron. The only I iron is hemming tape!:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

I have a life, that's why (am 65).[Deleted User] said:Hi,jings, are you folks clarty or just lazy.I iron my bedding and towels, fold neatly then put in airing cupboard.Must be the younger generation, who live on ready meals rather than make a good pot of soup, or mince an tatties.
Live on my own so the only person who sees my bedding and towels is me.
Couldnt give a toss if friends and family iron stuff or not, I go to see them not judge them on their housing.
I do separate whites only because I wash them at a different temperature from other stuff.Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)17 -
I separate my washing.
I'd rather have a full laundry basket than grey whites.
I also iron.
I find it relaxing rather than a chore.
It's great to get into a freshly made bed with ironed Egyptian cotton sheets.
People should just do what suits them and not do what doesn't.

Do you hunt and gather your own food?[Deleted User] said:Must be the younger generation, who live on ready meals rather than make a good pot of soup, or mince an tatties.
Do you manually wash clothes?
Do you listen to the radi or watch TV?
Do you use a fridge, freezer or a cold room?
No?
Must be because at one point, YOU were the younger generation who got rid of a load of stuff you thought was pointless in your modern world. Just like the current "younger generation" who, yes, need warnings not to drink battery acid but also think whether a task is useful or not.
I can tell when something has been ironed and I like it but it's not worth the time or energy to iron so I don't bother.9 -
And there's nothing wrong with that.anotheruser said:

Just as there's nothing wrong with thinking it is worth the time or energy to iron.
What some people see as a pointless task is not pointless to others.3 -
I once stayed with an aunt who ironed undies…. Everyone is allowed their own slice of madness!
I separate washing.whites with lights, darks and then bright colours. Mainly because bright green fluff on black clothes makes me sigh.I very occasionally iron bedding, and have a few clothes that I would iron for special occasions. But don’t think I’ve ironed more than once every three months since I learnt to spin shirts on a lighter spin and hang on a hanger to dry, working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0
