Beans have been awful in the runner department and I will think seriously about next year.

Have a try with climbing French beans, I've found they seem to do better than runners. Cobra is a good one, and climbing purple podded for something different

I do grow both dwarf and climbing French Beans (both purple pods) - Purple Teepee dwarf and Blauhilde climbing. The latter are completely covered in blackfly currently.

I have found great success with dwarf beans. Big harvest and it suppressed weeds due to low growing and close spacing. Lack of £'s meant the ladybirds had to take care of the aphids. Next year want to try purple pod or climbing barlotti beans. My neighbour's purple pods look amazing!
Bottled a few kg's of William pears today, next batch will be for christmas pear brandy.

  • Please could you share how you bottle the pears in brandy?  I have about 2/3 of a bottle of brandy left after making Christmas cakes a couple of years ago and access to pears in a community orchard that no-one else seems to bother about.  Would love to try making some for presents.

    Many thanks x

Your links were a bit fragmented - I found the first one here, the second oNE (love that site) just needs the space removing after L

Well my cucumber plant seems to have gone a bit mental over the few days I was away and I now have 6 cucumbers to harvest so will be making something with those fairly soon.
I potted on another 3 cucumber plants today as well so hoping they will take off as well and Ill get a good crop from them too.
I am going to try and slice them and freeze them and then when I want to use them I will put them into smoothies / soups and stews since I know their texture will change but it will still be a good vitamin / fibre boost in the colder weather.

I was going to pull up my runner beans today because I have had all of two pods from it but I went to pull it up today and have noticed more have appeared so I will give it a little while yet.

Ive also potted on another 4 tomato plants that were late planted and 6 pepper plants which are still going.

I also have 4 pea plants that have appeared from no where.

Peeked in the greenhouse and I think my cabbages are putting out some new growth after butterflies got to them so I might be able to salvage them yet.

Mixed leaf lettuce is flourishing too in the bed I made for it.

My two courgette plants look like they have a few more in them yet

Strawberries are filling their bed nicely now with runners too.

I also sat last night and made a list of bits and pieces that I want to grow next year and have gotten most of the seeds ready but I have some more to grab but I want to get a fence up around my vegetable plot before next year and get the new beds filled and settled.

I also gave my privet hedge a good chop the other day so I am planning to have a day and attack the pile of cuttings and turn it into leaf mulch to put over the beds come winter.

I still have carrots to plant for winter and I am trying to decide whether to find a bit tub and put some potatoes in it for a (hopefully) few later crops
    Time to find me again
